We liked this newer style biv. It had recently been given a spruce up by a guy called Jon as part of the FMC Love My Hut programme. Even the dunny was in good condition!

Nice work! Thanks for sharing, I have looked into this route and was put off by the Jordan Stream section. Good on you for braving through that one!

Thanks for the feedback @marcelorofer. In good weather the entry into the Jordan is ok. I'm pretty sure I may have dropped in a little too central and needed the snow grass to climb down some steeper sections. There were foot trods and if you're not bothered about keeping the feet dry, it's ok. I'm glad you enjoyed the film, have a nosey at some of my other adventure loop runs. Cheers Christian.

I'm glad you enjoyed this wee film. Don't worry about age, it's a route that rewards determination! Probably best ridden in summer/autumn, as the conditions are nicer on the body, and you can carry less gear. If going all the way to the nice Poulter Hut, be aware that the Poulter River crossing just before the hut can be risky after a few days of rain or snow melt. The Casey 2 is a great hut and a good fall back spot if needed. Trust-Poulter Hut in between, is an older hut and colder with an open fire and less insulation. It's only a couple of km's up the river bed from where I stashed my bike to the Poulter Hut and about 4km through nice bush, to Lake Minchin, well worth the trip if you're a fisherman or to hear/see the Whio or even Kiwi. Karerera often nest near the Poulter too. And then there's the Kakariki! Whole valley is well worth the effort!

It's one of the few backcountry routes in a National Park open to MTB's up to where I left my bike. The trail is pretty dull on your feet, but fast and fun on the bike. I tend to hike what I can't run or ride.

It was a real surprise to see quite a few Kākāriki in the Hawdon. Quite a few other native birds around as well: Kea, Kaka, Mōhua and Karearea, but too hard to film. All thanks to the pest controllers who we met, and the Kea monitors who we passed up near the tarn. Bird watching is cooler than I expected, might have to get a notebook and pencil :)

@cctrailrunningnz2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the vid. The hut I stayed in had mats supplied for each bunk, so no need to carry anything to sleep on. It was also a very warm day and the hut held it's heat well into the night, so I used a very small down sleeping bag and no liner. Yep, slept in the clothing, and that pre dawn chill was taken care of with the thermals I had carried. Weather in NZ changes fast, so even on the best forecast, I've got warm up gear. Hope you subscribe. It encourages me to get out on the next adventure. Cheers Chris.

Was the section through the bush pretty bad? Do you think it would be any better in summer? Cheers for the vid, nice work!
@cctrailrunningnz2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse, I'm thinking the bush keeps pretty damp, even in summer. It was about 40% rideable, mainly due to windfall, and technical parts that were easier to push up than ride. With summer comes more daylight hours, so that would change things in providing a longer day to get the bush section done. All the grassy parts would be drier and less need to do the long detour up to the Hurunui swing bridge. With a low river, I'd cut directly across Holmes Bay. If I was going back, I'd run the bush, as that's my happy place. I'm curious to know what the section from Windy Point into the Hope track is like for an MTB though. I'm glad you enjoyed the vid, hope you are a subscriber now. Cheers Chris.
@jessereynolds90132 жыл бұрын
@@cctrailrunningnz I ended up trying this a few weeks ago. We started from Loch Katrine as had a 4wd. We ended up crossing the Hurunui by Holmes bay with the bikes. Even with the spring melt the deepest section we crossed was halfway up the thighs so really not bad and saved a lot of biking up to the swingbridge. The bush section on the way in wasn't very, fun. Id say we rode 5% of it. The last few km in the bush was quite ridable down from the saddle though. The flats to Hope kiwi lodge were good but a bit tiring with the squashy grass. The way back was significantly easier and shorter. We may have rode 30% of the bush section on the way back. I pulled a lot of windfall off the track so hopefully is slightly easier for the next person haha. I saw this report of people coming in from the other way cris.lovell-smith.com/trips/2011/12/mission-into-hope-kiwi-lodge/ sounds as though it is potentially worse though.
@cctrailrunningnz2 жыл бұрын
Great to read about your experience Jesse. Glad you could avoid that Hurunui swing bridge. The access ramp off that is tricky in cycle shoes! I agree, unless you have a high tolerance for hike a bike, those bush sections, windfall, mud bogs and narrow channels, it's not much fun lugging a bike and your gear through. I have also been researching access from the Windy Point end to Hope Kiwi Lodge. I reached out to Deane Parker who passed through on one of his adventures. bikepacking.com/plog/doubtful-hope-new-zealand-film/ He said it was 50% hike a bike (for me I'm thinking probably a lot more hike and struggle) I also thought of the other route up the Hope using the farm track, but doubt access is possible from the land owner. I'll ask to check what I've heard. There is a horse route up the river to Hope Kiwi lodge that maybe an option. www.hshr.org.nz/trek-the-high-country__trashed/historic-hope-kiwi-pack-track/ From there to St Jacobs and Top Hope, it's river flats and grass banks.
