We had one of the biggest Pacifics besides the US. The biggest drivers put on Cape Gauge. The largest firebox, and speeds exceeding 100mph. A.G. Watson made a masterpiece.

844 pulling a 27 car train is insane, this is a combination of the normal UP excursion consist with the Rio Grande Ski Train consist, which is 18 cars long, so this was a super long train

It is a shame some millionaire or billionaire can't help fund these projects... God bless these railroads for their effort to keep these locomotives alive, but a little more creativity at raising revenues is needed. The Brits have an excellent steam restoration culture, bringing back and maintaining steam that was truly on the junk heap... At least these locomotives are not junk, despite being decommissioned. After running them hard for so many years, of course they'd be due for an overhaul...

The 261 I believe wasn’t originally designed to pull a train on that type of terrain. Therefore the pistons were re-stroked to a larger stroke which gave the 261 a louder exhaust, and more power so it could tackle the grade, unlike the 261, the 765 was built more for this type of job while the 261 I believe was built for more even land.
@justahillbilly77774 жыл бұрын
Actually, 765 itself is also more of a flatlands locomotive. The reason it can handle grades like what're in the New River Gorge and the old CNO&TP, the Rathole Division, is because it shares the same base mechanical design as the C&O 2-8-4s, which tackled the New River Gorge and similar terrain on the C&O more or less on a daily basis. And for the curious ones, the reason I mentioned the Rathole is because when 2716 went down back when the Southern had her, 765 was leased and finished up 2716's season for the Southern. One of the excursions was a round trip through the Rathole. Hopewell Productions covered it in their film Wheeling In The Rathole. I recommend giving it a watch after watching Extra 765 West so that you have context for the opening of the film.
@southwestvirginiarailfan7294 жыл бұрын
@@justahillbilly7777 the 765 basically shares the same design as the c&o engines did, except the 765 was built before those were.

Just wait until 2716 is back up and running. You'll be able to hear plenty of instances of her C&O hooter being sp00ky.
