@@s.m.brownconstruction4000 you're not wrong. My intention in this video was to avoid antenna theory in a simple primer. In this case, the longer antenna is 1/4y on 2m and 1/2y on 70cm. A much better match than the shorter antenna which is 1/8y on 2m. So in this case, the longer antenna is a better match. Thanks for the feedback.

Really enjoyed the video. You're a hell of a man, doing this out in the freezing cold. I'm an old pussy. I activate in this weather in the cab of my pickup. I use an 891, an ATAS antenna on the fender of my truck, and a 30ah battery sitting on the dashboard next to my radio. Come warmer weather I find a picnic bench, hook up my Chelegance MC-750, and the same radio and battery. You had some really good contacts on this activation. Nice work, Swampy!

Your distance suggestions are unrealistic. 30 to 50 miles mobile-to-mobile? Only with significant elevation (a few hundred feet) and no obstructions... but when does that actually happen? K4AAQ WRPG652
@pearce100Ай бұрын
There is a 'technical' difference between FRS and GMRS that does affect real-world use. The Narrow/Wide thing. A GMRS user who wants to talk to an FRS user should set their radio to Narrow (FRS is ONLY Narrow, no option). Why not just set a GMRS radio to Narrow all the time? Repeaters are mostly set for Wide. How 'incompatible' is it? Not totally. A Narrow FRS radio transmission will seem to have 'low audio' on a wide GMRS receiver, and a Wide GMRS transmission will sound loud and a little distorted on an FRS receiver. Is it a badly 'designed' mix of options and requirements given the shared channels? Absolutely. K4AAQ WRPG652
@pearce100Ай бұрын
Honest (brutal?) evaluation? You were 'winging it' - random and scattershot. You said things as they came to you, with little to no plan. Most people can't do this kind of talk off the top of their head, regardless of how knowledgeable they are (and you clearly are). They need organization, probably written down (or on your phone) as an outline at least. You do receive praise, because that's what people do - A for Effort. And if 'public speaking' like this is rare to never for you, it takes courage to step up. If you get a chance to do it again, maybe my comments will help. K4AAQ WRPG652

@@Sojourner_40 wow. Yes, after your comment, I read up on this and did not know this. It's a shame because there are some very robust networks that were reliant on repeater linkage. Per the FCC, it's focused on Localized communication, which I understand. Looks like folks are going to have to lean on Ham Radio to get wider reach. Even though I support more hams, it is unfortunate that GMRS is now even more limited.

Enjoyed your video and you all had a great trip despite the difficulties, one thing I noticed was you had the electric chainsaw and made a statement that you're down to a battery and a half. I overland by myself mostly use my electric chainsaw at least every other trip, I assume you all had an inverter to recharge your batteries. I have found that have an inverter is an important as having a chainsaw as I can charge the battery as I'm driving around.
@SwampFoxOverland2 ай бұрын
All four of us on this trip had a power station with an inverter, yes. I think that the power station and the ability to recharge all batteries on the run is very important. Hunter and I use ours to power our fridges, recharge camera and drone batteries, and also to recharge flashlights and phones. We didn't have to recharge the chainsaw batteries, but could have if needed. Also, I'm planning on adding a chainsaw to my loadout as well! Thanks for watching! -Rich
