I had the old recording with szell where he takes this so fast that marcellus has to slurr some notes...marcellus never had a very fast tongue

I think Marcellus' articulation speed is just fine on that recording (listen to all the other parts) and I'm sure he would have had no trouble articulating them. I don't know why those two notes were slurred, but I'm sure that Szell must have approved.

Good point although Szell loved Marcellus, and with good reason so he may have purposely ignored it...Marcellus articulation on the shepard on the rock is a bit slower than Wright's as well so I"m not so sure he could tonuge as fast as the 96 tempo that Szell has on that scherzo @@johnwiersba9957
