Slow arpeggio at 3:06 is start of Country Joe's Walk in Santiago. He adds key of G harmonica (mostly inhaling). I don't know the other chords. They may repeat some of the ones cited here. If anyone knows, i'd like to play it some time. From his Incredible! Live! album.

Thanks for your comment! It's a Martin 000-17, very dry sounding guitar and perfect for early Fahey stuff. Actually it sounds way better than recorded in this video. I'll finally have to buy a decent mic and have to pay more attention to mic placement.

@@rhabarberkompott thanks for a quick response, i will have a look, do you find them working better than the standard metal picks?
@rhabarberkompott
@rhabarberkompott Жыл бұрын
@@lubonewDepends. I also use standard metal picks sometimes (see my new Valhalla version, those are Dunlop standards .018) Compared to the metal ones the freedom picks feel different on the fingers and are a bit clunky. You have to get used to it. Some like them, others not. As with any finger picks you have to find the right angle/spot to make them work. They sound a bit softer. Don't be misled by the kind of 'plasticky' sound of my recording. That's just a cheap mic and my lack of skills in audio engineering..

What advice would you give yourself when you first started playing guitar ?
@rhabarberkompott
@rhabarberkompott Жыл бұрын
1. It is better to practice for half an hour each day as for a couple of hours once a week. 2. Learn the simple stuff before the fancy stuff. 3. Be patient and focus on one thing even if it gets boring. Don't get lost in youtube instruction videos. 4. You don't have to read music, but try to learn and understand the basics of music theory. 5. Improvise as often as possible.

Thank you so much. I consider this to be his best composition and you play it so close to the original. When Brazilian musician Antonio Carlos Jobim came to America, he saw the Mojave Dessert for the first time from high up in a plane. He composed 'Mojave' as a result. In 1966 or so, John Fahey was driving from Albuquerque back to San Francisco. As he headed across California, the Portland Cement Factory was billowing smoke high in the sky. The sun was in the sky and in the process of setting on the other side of all this billowing. It was a huge visual spectacle. John Fahey composed this piece and shared it with his girlfriend shortly after arriving back in San Francisco.

@@rhabarberkompott - You are quite welcome. If you don't already have it, get his 'Days Have Gone By' album (1967). On it, he played a Bacon & Day Senorita guitar from the 30's? By listening to this album with headphones, you can appreciate the exquisite tonal characteristics of this particular guitar. Fahey was diabetic and did not live and eat right. He drank and smoked.

@@StellarFella A tragic story indeed. I know the album "Days Have Gone By" and I am also intrigued by the unique sound of the guitar. Do you by any chance know which guitar he was playing on "Death Chants.." (specifically the 1967 re-recordings)? Not sure if it was the Senorita or maybe the Gibson Recording King.
@StellarFella

@@rhabarberkompott - Following certain threads of blogs by people in the know, it was a Ray Whitley Recording King (an off brand built by Gibson) that he destroyed in a fight with his girlfriend. It was replaced by a Martin D-76 bicentennial commemorative. I was apparently wrong about the Bacon&Day Senorita being destroyed in this fight. It is alleged to have been sold to Country Joe McDonald and later sold to someone now living in the UK. The Recording King was put back together using lots of spruce and rosewood cleats and hide glue. Peter Lang has played it satisfactorily. I haven't yet been able to ascertain what type of guitar John Fahey was playing on Death Chants. Stay cool this summer!
