Absolutely shocking what happened to the royal arch that should have been a listed building

The road bridge has been a curse to the city. It's an ugly looking thing for a start, ruining the views of the river. It's also built in a ridiculous location, bringing traffic right into the centre of the city most of which is just passing through. It's destroyed the entire river front as a busy road has to take traffic out to the ring road. It should have been built at the western edge of the city. Dundee has one of the most notoriously corrupt councils in Britain though.

Old enough to remember John (Jack) Lamb the butcher who was a friend of my father. They both attended talks by the guy, Ian Hamilton, who stole the Stone of Destiny. Also remember the Café Gibson, next door and Charlie Reid's shoe shop where I had my feet X-rayed for shoe fit! It was a vibrant High Street unlike now.

That bridge ruined the city. Paid for I believe in part by shopkeepers who assumed that the traffic would stop and shop in dundee but all it did was cause congestion. Dundee lost it's access to the waterfront and the docks which would have been an asset today.

I was a youngster in my final year at North Links Primary when this was made. I well remember the salmon nets and the cobles of Joseph Johnston bringing in the catches - big silver salmon glinting in the sunlight. It's remarkable how different Montrose looks around the mouth of the South Esk and the harbour. This was shot just before the big changes that accompanied the building of the oil support base on the south side of the river and the old Wet Dock being filled in and Rossie Island ceasing to be an island. When the film shifts to the North Esk and the Northwater Bridge the music is from the Allegretto from "Four Scottish Dances" by Malcom Arnold. A lovely piece, we had it played at my mother's funeral earlier this year.

( lived there for a short time 1953 what then was called the Dalhousie Hotel....it has since burned down...the hotel at 47 must have taken its name. My mother died there very suddenly and I was put in Montrose Home... I have been back since. I now live in NZ

Thank you Pamela I now live in NZ but have been to Carnoustie in recent years, last time 2017... my mother was buried there and I have in recent years put a headstone on her grave. Where the Dalhousie Hotel was, the one that my mum worked in and we lived in the attic, it appears now has a house in its place. I did notice the the hotel on the HIgh Street was now the Dalhousie Hotel. I have done a liny bit of research on the original Dalhousie Hotel, very interesting. I did go to school when In Carnoustie and it would have been on the HIgh Street... I assumed the school I saw when I have walked to the grave yard from the city was the school I went to... that was 1953 and I had just turned 10. Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to write.

@@theoneatone Aw no problem, Kinloch Primary School the school on the High Street was demolished in 2010. The original school railings are there. Some housing has been built on the lower part but a lot of what was the playground is still there. If your last visit was 2017, I'm not sure what school it was you saw? Two new schools were built, one being out the far end near Barry and the other in the grounds of Carnoustie House Grounds (local park up the brae). I'm not sure when the newer Dalhousie Hotel took its name, that has got me intrigued so I think I will do a bit of research myself. Is your mother in Shanwell Cemetery? Most of my family is there.
@theoneatone2 жыл бұрын
@@pameladiamond9603 Thanks Pamela, must have been the railings I saw. My mother has two headstones as the initial one went missing and they made an other one. The first one must have turned up as mum now has two head stones. The original Dalhousie Hotel was on the corner of High Street and the street the bus going and coming from Dundee used to go down... there is a house there now. There's some history and a photo the original on the net somewhere... Thanks for getting back to me. Kind regards. William Garden.

The old Overgate, University Rag week, the 'Fifies' some things should never have changed. A lot of things have changed for the better but I felt the heart of the city was ripped out when they (allegedly corrupt council) agreed to the demolition of the old Overgate rather than internally modernising of the existing buildings, a bit like the Royal mile in Edinburgh. Still at least the rerouting of the Tay Bridge and giving back access to the waterfront is a step in the right direction. I also doubt very much whether the whole Rag week escapades would be acceptable in this very PC day and age of 'social justice warriors', 'snowflakes' and the 'woke' generation.

The planners did worse than the Germans. Station was absolutely stunning entrance to Dundee. Wellgate was turned into a drab Soviet could be anywhere shopping centre and the crime of the Overgate is unforgivable. Medieval buildings torn down when even in the 60s there was a proposal to keep the facades. Dundee is undergoing a rebirth but by god they ruined the place for decades. So nice to see Tayside House gone and Dundee connected to the docks again. I’m not old enough to remember the water coming right up to Dundee town centre. Which of course went to give us a bridge.
