I don't see why a person can't do CrossFit and MMA. I mean sure, you'd have to pick one to compete in at any given time if you want to be the best, but you can do both for sure. I used to do gym and Taekwondo all the time. Gym in the morning, TKD after work. Easy. It's just a matter of being disciplined. All you have to do is cut down on the intensity for one when you want to train for competition in the other. I don't see the issue. I respect Firas, but I don't agree with him. I actually find it strange that he holds such a negative view of it, since he also incorporates gymnastics into training fighters. CrossFit has many carryovers to MMA given the sheer level of strength and stamina CrossFitters gain from their workouts. Functional training also increases muscle endurance and recovery time, too. Given its flexibility in terms of what you want to train for, it's got everything a fighter would want. All you have to do is swap out some of the CrossFit exercises for MMA related ones during your training. I don't see the problem.

1. It's been shown that crossfit has led many participants to be prone to injury; an mma athlete/combat sports athlete is already prone to that. 2. Athletes or anyone with a specific goal in mind requires specificity. Crossfit tries to be everything at once with no real gains. 3. Many movements that have been implemented into crossfit from other sports are not usually taught well; it's only a recent development that has it where specialists have begun teaching crossfitters proper form and technique. The only thing crossfit has is novelty and helping popularize lesser known sports like weightlifting.

@@coffeehousephilosopher7936 1. Getting injured to be expected when you're competing. All you can do is work smart by changing up the regiment. When you're training for fighting, drop the Olympic lifts and weights two weeks before fight camp and just stick to body weight training, gymnastics, swimming, running, etc, which is already a huge component of CrossFit. This is why I'm surprised by Firas' stance on this, because this is exactly how he trains his fighters already. It's all built in. 2. Fight training is the opposite of that. There is no specificity. The goal always to attain a functional combination of strength, speed, agility, and stamina. Again, CrossFit completely fits this mold and produces insane athletes. 3. It's no different than running into McDojos. Gotta do your own research and learn proper form/nutrition. Again, this is a given when it comes to any training.

What people don’t understand about perceived intensity, is that 80% of people coming to a CrossFit gym don’t understand the very basic level of “move quickly”. To a Jujitsu person, the very basic “move rather quickly” is demanded of them even as a white belt in very basic sparring. There is no water break, there is no fix your ponytail, take a break. When a CrossFit coach says we need intensity, they are seeking a very basic amount of demand from a client that knows nothing of the concept. From BJJ, all I’ve seen is what’s on tv, and all they do is get bloody and it’s nothing but breaking arms and dislocating them. (I know this isn’t true, but, this is what your perception is of something you know nothing about as well)

Pro athletes also have nutritionists, coaches, physiotherapists and so on. Basically a full team of people to help you perform better in your sport so you don't even have to think about that. If you are an amateur just listen and look to your body (which takes a lot of experience and practice) and you'll be fine. And stay Zen no matter what.

Basically he’s suggesting that all the CrossFit ers are the dumb uneducated cultists. Now to the point why it’s so popular among the general public: it is fun, quick and very rewarding and therefore is more sustainable unlike other disciplines for an average person. Injuries happen - yes, but ANY fun activity carries some inherent risk

Saying that you may pay a price health for doing any discipline or partial movement might discourage some sedentary people to join them. However the problem with partial movement is that you might focus too much on some things and overlook what your health needs are.

To be fair, Crossfit is a business that markets itself off of its athletes and intense wods, Cross training has existed for a long time, before crossfit and mma. If you train smart and hard( when appropriate) you'll advance well and adjust the better you get.

Do what makes you happy. Whether that be Crossfit or mma or bodybuilding or hunting or yoga. Whatever brings you joy in life and it's not harming or hurting those around you.
