Designing transit system which relies on motorists being considerate to not block its track to function seems a recipe for disaster.

I respect this thing's existence, but I can't help but think it'd be best off as just a trolley bus at this point; easier to expand service and can avoid the terrible drivers that we've all seen blocking the trams.

I lived on H street from 2008 to 2011 and there was a lot of interest and excitement about the streetcar idea and how it might change living in the area. I moved to Capitol Hill and then to Alexandria, finally moving away from DC entirely to Connecticut in 2015, so I STILL haven't had a chance to ride the streetcar. We just rode the good 'ol X2 bus back in the day.

Well to be fair the X2 is still (usually) faster than the streetcar.

I keep forgetting this thing exists, so it’s great that your video exists so I can learn more about the streetcar! It’s a very short line, only 1.9 miles, so hopefully it could be expanded one day to Benning Ridge or Mt. Vernon square, but my hopes aren’t high.

It’s a shame that D.C. doesn’t have a functional tram. Having used them in multiple cities in the Netherlands, I can state that they are a great compliment to the bus, subway, ferry, and train systems. Add a bicycle to the mix and you have a good set of car-free options in a large metropolitan area.
@andyontrackКүн бұрын
Absolutely, would love it if the line were improved/expanded. Hoping that some of DDOT's planned improvements to H Street NE make a positive difference!

I miss the Metro. Used to ride it a lot to/from work when I lived in MontCo or when I went down to DC at least once a year. Was always fun traveling from Shady Grove.
@triplej7556 күн бұрын
I’ve only taken phase 1 of the silver line. I flew into Dulles, took the temporary silver line express bus to While-Reston East, and continued on my way. But the segment that I did see was really fun, although with recency bias! Even the newest line has some really cool secrets, like a cancelled station! I also noticed on my ride that there was a really long time before Spring Hill station. I was more forgiving of how long it took to build when I realized just how long the line is! The silver line I think has the most mileage of any line! It’s crazy how Ashburn is on the same line as Smithsonian, despite having a completely different environment! Loudoun Gateway is kind of a joke, but I think the intention was to allow people that live west of the airport to get to the metro without needing to take the highway. Hopefully as time goes on, more people try the metro rather than navigate crazy DC traffic!
@triplej7556 күн бұрын
My most used Metro line!!! I love how I could either take the Metro to Smithsonian or other places from New Carrollton, or the Marc train to Union Station. I also played Microsoft Train Simulator as a kid, and you can see the orange line metro tracks when driving on the Northeast Corridor map! Departing the station, you go on a bridge over a railway spur, where in Train Simulator, there’s a scenario called ‘Train Rescue’, and that spur is where you pick up a broken down train! Also all these years, and I never knew that nearby there was a pylon with all 6 metro colors!
