A very fine look at this band. Sadly no more in current form but you can hear the quality of it for sure. This and the Lucknow Band formed the two parts of the Prince of Wales Division bands until downsizing yet again in 2006.

I'm sure these bandsmen (and women) were a territorial unit (Reservists) and they may not be as sharpe on parade as the Regular force types but by God they still can play! Former member of a very proud Canadian Army Regiment, the Royal Winnipeg Rifles or as their official second name, the Little Black Devils.

Just so we are clear. It is true that the cuts in band strengths have been less severe in the Guards Regiments than elsewhere in the British Army - where most of the bands we ever knew have been amalgamated out of existence (including the bands of the Paras, Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, Army Air Corps, County Regiments and so on, to name but a few). And this is presumably in line with a sad future concept that the Guards will basically provide much of the music for the entire Army. Nevertheless, a quick comparison between BR 2019 and BR 1985 reveals as follows. Massed Guards Bands in general (5 regiments) 170 here as opposed to 220 in 1985. Massed Corps of Drums: 40 here compared with 80 back then. Massed pipes and drums - no comparison as the 2019 event features other Regiments (while back in 1985 we had 60 from the Scots and Irish Guards as such). The figures speak for themselves, but are sad nevertheless. Horse Guards needs a lot of playing musicians to really fill it with sound - hence the interest in guest bands from abroad, non-Guards participants, choirs and so on. Happily the effect is less severe when we have the march-ons and march-offs down Birdcage Walk or The Mall, as these are more enclosed spaces. And of course the quality is high. Hence my greater interest in watching those broadcasts (readily accessible on KZbin" as opposed to the main shows themselves.

I'm coming to your video of this lovely performance quite late, Ron Rose, and totally by chance...but I love it. Looks like Drum Major Scott Fitzgerald. I hope you enjoyed being there as much as I enjoyed watching it.

Went to this Tattoo. Up to the usual standard, with the exception of the Pipe Band, which I think was one of the most disappointing Pipe Bands I have seen at the Tattoo. I think somebody told me later, they had problems with the acoustics.

Played with the volunteer bands from 78 until 92 both as a serviceman and civilian nice to see they are still going and playing well. Most people don't realise we did this on top of our full time service jobs. Two or three practices a week after a 60 hour week and gigs at weekends. All because we loved playing, no extra pay.
