It's interesting how a gap year can lead to personal growth. By the way, I found out about ResuBot, which could be helpful for anyone looking to update their resume after such a break.

Your perspective on taking time off is refreshing. It's something more people should consider, especially in today's fast-paced world.

I recently heard about Resubot and how it makes resume building easier. It's nice to have tools that can simplify things when you're ready to make a move.

How much money did you save up before you felt 'safe' enough to quit? I have been in the 'saving' mode for 8+ years. Im 31, and feel like this is the perfect time for me to take my adult gap year. But my corp job is now offering me a better pay and a better role, im tempted and my resolve to take the time off is being fully tested. Im thinking maybe i should stay with them part time for a bit, save some more, but not sure where to draw the line and quit cold turkey. Im from a single parent household so money has been a sensitive topic ; but now that i do have enough to quit (or so i think) im really scared. Any advice?

Hello fellow ex Amazonian! Five years late, but I feel like I can kinda resonate with this. I was with Amazon as well for 2 years and those two years was rough, especially working with a very toxic team in AWS. Instead of quitting, I actually got PIP'd and took the severance and haven't been working since March of 2024 and just took some time off instead of going back on the job hunt. Taking the nine months off really helped me clear my mind, figure out what I need and want to do for work and living, and also needed the time to grieve as I had to say my final good bye to my dog. Now, I'm back on the job hunt, prepping for interviews, and learning new skills to get into a new field while still being in tech, although I am a little worried about the job market and having a gap on my resume.

I came here from the 1 year update and wanted to listen to the initial before getting into the update! I left the military for full time entrepreneurship in 2023 so this is interesting to me. Thank you for sharing.

Did any commenter below note the dramatic difference in career trajectory ....well maybe the transition from single corporate job to an eclectic collection of jobs / hustles. Wow,... are doing ok now. Maybe you are an entrepreneur type? Wow...your life is both encouraging and a bit scarry. I mean this in a good way, cuz so many out here are scared to leave a well paying full time gig. Wow. You are brave.

The only thing that I like about my job is that people leave me alone when they know I have to move the plan. Literally that's all I have to say, I'm making changes to the plan, and they leave me alone for the rest of the next three days. And that's my favorite

I wasn't but I did work with the team during expansion. I was with building the data/monetization arm. It wasn't about hating it but rather that the lifestyle wasn't for me and that I didn't feel that it aligned with me.

I finished my final exams at the end of June 2014, before I turned 21. And I managed to find a full time professional job and started immediately on July 1st, 2014. Then I found out my partner in my first relationship was cheating on me when I was having my final exams, that was my 21st birthday “gift”. Fast forward to almost 10 years later, I’ve been with my 3rd company now in a different country and I never ever get to take any breaks between jobs or even moving from Southeast Asia to the US. I’ve been thinking a lot lately and I think I might take a career break soon before I get back to the workforce. I feel like maybe it’s time I finally give myself a break to breathe cause I’ve always been prioritizing people that matter to me for a really long time.

It sounds like you hustle a lot and get into the grind of things. I am similar; however, I do think I would like more time enjoying things that don't offer financial rewards, but money is a concern of mine. You mentioned money as a concern of yours. Do you think you get a good amount of downtime? I get that you get boosts from the work you do such as with geriatrics, but are you satisfied with the selfish time, for a lack of a better term, that you get?
@thinhtawnle
@thinhtawnle Жыл бұрын
Hey there - GREAT question. I actually find that I have lot of good downtime. Because of how I structure my work, I am now able to see my family and friends a LOT more than when I had a 9-5 job. Funny enough, my Mom now thinks it's normal to see me 2 weeks at a time 3-4 times out of the year instead of seeing me one week for an entire year... This is also the reason why I chose this - it's because I can drop and go whenever I need to.

@@thinhtawnle I guess it depends on the jobs you take. Like I said, I had a similar situation, where now I feel more independent; however, I earn less. It makes me worried about my future, so I work a lot.

@thinhtawnle
@thinhtawnle Жыл бұрын
Great question! At this point no, however, I've thought about worse case scenarios, and if circumstances change and a 9-5 is the best option, then I would. But I think it will eventually lead me back to this position where I'd love to work for myself, or at least still have something of mine.

Yea, I took a year off after I burnt out, it was the best year of my life in terms of finding myself and learning about what I want to prioritize in life. And to avoid burnouts in future, focus on myself.
