As an American, I remember when I was in the Air Force in ALS(airman leadership school) we had a section where we had to argue with each other on what was morally right or wrong on controversial topics, and one of them was whether or not we should make English the official language of America. It was at this point that all 9 of us in that class expressed confusion because we thought it WAS the official language of America. It was explained to us that we don't have one, and what that would mean from a law standpoint is that anywhere there is written language in public, like say for a restaurant, it would be required that it was written in English as WELL as any other languages chosen. So let's say you go to an oriental store. There would need to be English signs accompanying every item with text in a foreign language. We all voted anonymously, then deliberated with each other after the vote. Much to my surprise, I was in the minority for voting for yes, it should be our official language. In my head, there were no downsides because anyone who needed the other language wouldn't be harmed at all by an additional language. It just seemed like a win-win, but evidently several people disagreed.
