Rather than dry brushing I use a sponge. The first stage is a 'wash' with a darker base coat. I like a greenish tint, so I use a Burnt umber with equal parts moss green, and then a bit of antique white. Add 50% water and use a sponge to wash the tiles. You can do a whole batch in minutes. After that dries I do a second stage. This with more antique white and a bit less burnt umber so its lighter. Then gather a hint of the mix on a sponge and 'dab' it onto the tile. You'll get the same effect as a dry brush, but you can do it a LOT faster.

I hear you. We didn't have much sense of game balance when we were younger. My gaming group is talking about starting a new Rifts campaign sometime soon, perhaps with the new Savage Worlds kickstarter. Hopefully things are a little better in that regard.

So what would happen if you just used one or two squares high floor pieces in the place of wall pieces, so essentially you would be using only floor pieces for both walls and floors.
@RobDigsGaming
@RobDigsGaming 8 жыл бұрын
+WarVet Gaming I suppose you could make tiles that way. You could give the 'wall' sections a slightly different paint scheme to make them stand out, so you'd know they were walls and not just steps. Other than having rooms with 5ft thick walls that kind of look like flooring, I don't see anything wrong with it. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

Dwarven Forge leaves the gaps because it allows minis to fit better since they use tall walls. If you use short walls, yes, you don't need the gap... but with tall walls, you need to leave a little more room for minis who have weapons, arms or hands that extend outside of the base.

It's worth picking up just for the original Eastman and Laird artwork as a collectors item. That said, I really wish we'd get a new TMNT roleplaying game as the Palladium system has aged very badly. That said, I believe this was released before the introduction of Mega Damage Capacity and as a result the Palladium system isn't quite as cluttered and unruly at this point as it would become after Rifts was introduced. It would still be fun to run a TMNT RPG game if you could find anybody willing to player and or learn the classic pre-RIFTS Palladium system.

Played both the revised and 2nd edition for years. Fun game at the time - but unfortunately - compared to other supers games it really doesn't live up to it's "unlimited" moniker. And the system itself started to wear on us as we were exposed to other systems. We eventually moved over to Mutants and Masterminds - but we still used characters from HU (loved the Masters of Speed) - as well as the Century Station and Grammercy Island setting books (both great setting books regardless of system).

F-king genius. Totally simplistic to use the pvc pipe connectors. Totally obvious solution, and I never would have thought of it. Love the 3D element.
@RobDigsGaming
@RobDigsGaming 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! That's what KZbin is all about. I plan to take the 3D aspect to the next 'level' with my inn project. The inn will have a main floor, an upstairs and a cellar, which will lead to more dungeon to explore. That means setting the main floor up one level, the upstairs up two levels and the cellar/dungeon, which will be the bulk of the build, will be set on the table surface. For the upstairs of the inn, I plan to buy 3" pieces of pvc, but from a wider gauge of pipe to help prevent tipping.

Rob Digs Gaming My two molds arrived yesterday, so I'm hoping to do my first casting as soon as tonight (but probably not until Friday). I'd like to stop at an art supply store on the way home from school today, but I've not had the time to watch the whole video series. Can you recommend any particular plaster, paint, or glue that you've determined are essential now that you're an expert? I saw you mentioned not bothering with the hydracast or dental plaster, but just using generic stuff. Any regrets or is generic fine? What about a particular paint, glue, or foam board or does any of that matter? I'm going to grab a bunch of stuff on my way home. Thanks.
@RobDigsGaming
@RobDigsGaming 9 жыл бұрын
watsonsd1 I gave an answer to most of these things yesterday, let me know if you're unable to see it for some reason. But basically, aside from the generic plaster being softer than some of the others (which can be good for sanding), I've had no complaints. Go with Aleen's Tacky Glue, and the least expensive acrylic paint you can find. I buy entry level paint at about $5 for a 180ml tube. I just buy the foam board on hand. Elmer's is the brand I think, but whatever's cheapest. Invest in a cutting mat and good quality box cutting tool. Cheap brushes are fine as dry-brushing is hard on them. A bulk pack with a variety of sizes is best. Good luck!

Do any of your videos show your method of storing all these completed tiles? It's premature on my part since I've never attempted it, but I worry how much room such a hobby will demand. I'd like to give it an attempt soon, but have no clue how to go about storing such fragile pieces.
@RobDigsGaming

Here is a link to an older video showing my storage. I've since moved into a house and have more space. My entire collection, including supplies and unused materials currently fits on two stackable resin shelving units, commonly used in garages or workshops, and the small bookshelf seen in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paXdmWR6r7mapsk

Damn. Those pieces look gorgeous. As someone about to start his daughter on D&D, I'm intimidated by the effort and skill this will take, but if I can find the time, I'm going to start to dabble. I'm guessing that this hobby also takes, in addition to hours upon hours of free time, a lot of room, perhaps a whole one, to devote to storage, painting, etc. Still, if I end up with something looking anywhere near that good, it will be worth it.

Thanks very much! The compliments on my work mean a great deal. And, if I can say, you're exactly the kind of viewer for which I make my videos. If you've gone back through my playlist, you'll see a complete novice teaching himself how to create game terrain. I'm a self-described rookie, and I continue to surprise myself at how good some of the stuff looks, with a little bit of patience and practice. I have a 'craft room' in my house that my wife and I share. We each have a desk and a couple of shelving units to store our material. Organization of your crafts can be a challenge all on its own. I have found creating terrain has added a whole new element to the RPG hobby for me, and it's very relaxing. You and you're daughter would have a blast, I bet. I'd be happy to answer any other questions, and there are a huge number of crafters on youtube that blow me away. Have fun!

Rob Digs Gaming How do you transport the finished product? Say, you need to take a single dungeon with you and the pieces clearly can't jostle and chip each other during the move? How do you pack them and in what?
@RobDigsGaming
@RobDigsGaming 9 жыл бұрын
watsonsd1 I hold games at my house, and so I don't typically travel with them. When I have, I carefully stow the various plastic containers and tubs in the trunk of my car. But more frequently, I would just take cardboard tiles with me to play away from home. I am currently building a Hirst Arts Inn (you can see the first 5 or 6 parts in my playlist) and at the end I plan to record a video on how I store it. Basically, I use straight-sided plastic tubs and stack layers of terrain pieces, separated by sheets of foamboard to help distribute the weight, with heavier pieces at the bottom. I cut small finger holes at the corners of the foamboard sheets so its easy to lift a tier of terrain out of the tub. Seems to work well for home storage, but for the road I would use smaller containers and choose to take fewer pieces. Hope that helps.

Rob Digs Gaming Twenty-five years ago when I was a regular player, I had a small, portable cabinet with a handle. It had probably thirty pull out trays that we lined with blue foam and then labeled each for our miniatures. I think the cabinet was intended for rock collectors or something. Given that the tiles are so much bigger than miniatures, there probably isn't a similar practical solution, but I wanted to make sure in case you knew of one. I think I'll likely follow your example and go the plastic tub route.

Very nice organization you have. I'm especially envious of your custom-made DM box for storage and die rolling! Very clever arrangement. I'd be interested in seeing more about props DM's use for their games, like your big skeleton key and maps. Having props helps to involve players tactilely in the game. Different people use their senses for information gathering in differing proportions, as some folks prefer touching objects, others prefer seeing things, still others like to hear information. Many of us use all these methods in various combinations, hence we hear descriptions, see miniatures, feel props, etc. The more you can supply to your players, the more involved they are in the game and help create the story and the various solutions to problems, puzzles and situations.

Thanks very much! I agree, maps and other physical items, such as bits of parchment, help tremendously. I own a prop replica of the cryptex from the DaVinci Code. @RobDigsGaming
@RobDigsGaming 9 жыл бұрын
Chad Sobodash That sounds like a great idea. Perhaps using the foamboard as a backing would still help with tile rigidity and keep them in good shape, prevent warping, etc, but the magnetic strips would be a great idea. As long as the table isn't aluminum! LOL. Let me know how it works.

if you're placing your walls on the side instead of on top of the floors, how do you use the cavern mold pieces?
@RobDigsGaming
@RobDigsGaming 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Obviously, natural or oddly shaped barriers or walls wont fit with the square floor tiles. In that case, I place them independently on top of existing floor tiles. I try to arrange them such that they either take up the entire square or leave enough room for a mini to use the square. Same goes if I'm creating a cavern out of other materials, like cardboard.

Heroes Unlimited was the first superhero rpg that I played.. I speculate that the writers of this book could have been inspired by 1970s tv shows. Bill Bixby starred in "The Magician" about a stage illusionist who uses his sleight of hand skills to fight crime. Lee Major starred in "The Six Million Dollar Man" about a cyborg secret agent for the United States. After a few sessions, the game campaign fell apart and I started playing different games, but I still have fond memories.

They also get rid of the D20ism that didn't make sense in a supers game like the stat. It uses the same mods from d20, but there is no stat and modifier now. The modifier is the stat.
