Went to my first lure coursing event in SO CA...boy the whippets sure get over the top excited when they're ready to run after the lure! Fun to watch but not my cup of tea. I'll stick with a dog show every now and then. It was fun to see the whippets run at full speed though!

@@AggieOfTheSmokies That's very tempting. I'm about a year away from making that commitment. Work has gotten in the way. Since I also live in Massachusetts, you will be the first to know when it's time.

I'm totally new to showing. I did a couple of trainings but 2nd training yesterday was a true disaster. I think she had too little excercise before the traininig. She wouldn't listen, barked at other dogs multiple times (rarely barks normally) and tried to play with the others, pulled on the show leash quit hard even though I heard her struggle to breathe. When running in the ring, she just tries to sprint. There is no way for me to have the leash loose. Should I try to tire her before training? Honestly, she also has a hard time walking next to me during walks unless she is really really really tired. She always tries to walk in front of me, pulling to the side from 1 smell to the next. I tried so many times stopping and seeking eye contact, waiting for her to stand next to me, changing direction, treats.... she just keeps doing it over and over. She is 8,5 months, is it normal for her age (maybe puberty?). Or will it be like this always? She seems to need little to a lot of leash pressure, depending on the mindset of the day :)
@AggieOfTheSmokies7 ай бұрын
You need to take her to obedience class. One that allows the use of prong collars. At that age if they haven’t learned to walk on a slack lead you have to change your approach. Is this a whippet?
@pitbaiker7 ай бұрын
@@AggieOfTheSmokies I use a martingale collar. Dara is a whippet female and has been with us for little over 2 months. She arrived at age of 6,5months. we go 2 x per week to dog school. She sticks to grass like an addict to :D Treats are often less interesting than the grass and smell of rabbit droppings. Even when presenting it at her nose while sniffing, she would not show interest. People from dog school joke I should come and gather some to dry and use as treats :) . We feel she pulls less with a harness but it's not allowed in do school, which I can understand.
I got a whippet cross from the Humane Society. He was smaller then our male cat, so the cat decided to be his mentor. Even when the dog was full-grown, they were the best of buds.

Hello just came upon your channel, I watched the stacking and walking I need a few pointers but not able to write a comment in some of your KZbin videos. I'm in SO CA started showing my dog for "fun" if that's possible lol you have some very pretty dogs. She was doing well stacking on the ramp but now she's leaning back...very frustrating trying to keep her legs straight under her shoulders she's pretty stubborn at times.

@AggieOfTheSmokies Жыл бұрын
Yes, I show under the kennel name Aristaios- one of those puppies is a champion, another major pointed, half sister is GCHB CH Aristaios Queen Bee who was a top 20 winner and national AOM that year. I’m in Rhode Island but my first litter was bred in Oregon when I was there and one of those puppies was shown in California, Aristaios Summer Honey Jasmine.

I'm frustrated stacking my whippet she keeps backing her body legs are straight under then she leans back when I'm fixing her back legs...she's becoming very stubborn the more I pull her forward the more she pulls back.
@AggieOfTheSmokies Жыл бұрын
Don’t worry if she rocks back a bit when you place her back legs. First, never let go of her head when you initially stack her. Second, put a bowl of treats on a table in front of her and once you’ve set her legs use your right hand to start feeding her treats - as she pulls forward to take the treats praise her for rocking forward. Don’t ever try to pull her forward, won’t work.

Notice I’m not holding his head but that’s because he already is steady on a stack.

How far back should the hind legs go? And should they be parallel? Are you aiming for a specific topline?
@AggieOfTheSmokies2 жыл бұрын
Back legs should be set so hocks are perpendicular to the ground/table. Aiming for level topline with slight rise over the loin and gentle slope to the croup, not a drop off. The rise and slope of the croup are genetic difficult to modify by stacking.

Actually there would be no bad comments if folks had them in there attic . Took me 3 years and 30 or so births at a time to get rid of mine . I tired pest control. Nope, I tried traps I even played recordings great honed owls owls in my attic . It sounded like the were playing basket ball up there they would all run one direction turn back and run the other way. No sleep you can forget that. I tried rat poison. Nope. It was me shilling out over 10,000 for a new roof and for the roofers to get rid of them and now peace. So squirrel looks fine to me.
