It's interesting to wonder about my fascination with this song, which is like an intro that becomes the song itself. Which is the zone that Neil was once-again seeking. It only lasted a month and a half in July t5h through August to Sept, 1977. This is a long version of Jeff Blackburn's song, "Windward Passage". Which was a regular on the Duck's setlist at the Catalyst.

Now that I look at it, this is just before Neil joined up with "The Ducks" in 1977 for a month-long or so string of gigs in Santa Cruz, which subsequently ended up with "The Ducks 'High Flyin", which has another side of "Evening Coconut" in "Windward Passage" by J. Blackburn. I guess this is one of those instances that I referred to before. It's cool that Neil is still at it. And so am I! All the best to you.

Interesting to experience a later performance of "Road of Plenty" El Dorado, and then within that algorhythmic world that instantly analyses what I say, * this is wonderful proof that for Neil, every song as it is played has its time. Anyway, I have always been captured by his elegant sense of melody. He did some incredible developments during this time in Sound effects, delays, echoes, other stuff, that took it all further, whatever "it" * means. * thanks. A lot of times it appears to go the other way; but that's okay. BTW, Whatever the outcome of the election, a lot has been disclosed, which is Good.

I love this song. In the end it mostly describes the futility of man. We build, we destroy, we try to save. But in the end it is all always changing. We find beauty and try to freeze it in time, like we are that powerful. Enjoy the beauty we have, don’t needlessly destroy it. But understand nothing lasts forever, not even you! Change is eternal…

"It's to windward" means it will be necessary to tack upwind to get there, unless the leg you're pointing on is not limited in this way, and all ya gotta do besides watch the jib for upwind luff flutter, is to get your sea-legs goin', which is what The Ducks do here.

This song never leaves me behind. Each time I hear it, there's something else just like how The Statue of Liberty is breathing in the air while Atlantis is waiting down below that comes to mind about what it is like to hear it. "Have you seen the Evening Coconut floating on the bay?"

Regarding the comments below on Dr. John’s involvement: Seems to me that this take is not only different in the sense that it is longer than the 1:41 version on Neil’s Archive box set, but after listening to both more than once I’m convinced that both takes are ENTIRELY different. Yes, the singing is similar on both, but I can hear certain inflections, etc. on one that I don’t hear on the other. (Of course they won’t sound too different - this is Neil we’re talking about here.) Frankly, I never even noticed there WERE edits on the shorter version - unless you’re referring to Neil’s lead guitar repeating the same lead solo three times (beginning, bridge, coda/fade out). Neil was known to do that early on in his career as well - eventually he found a way to be more creative with his leads in the studio and live (e. g. Crazy Horse). P. S. I happen to like both versions…but (apparently) Neil was unsatisfied with both, and chose not to release a version officially (the shorter one has been on KZbin for some time prior) for some 42 freaking YEARS. (By way of contrast: Down To The Wire [well, the Buffalo Springfield version(s)/mix(es), anyway] took 10 [Decade] and 34 [Box Set] years to be released. Neil was and is a hard person to please, apparently… …and the hardest person to please is himself. “More Barn” Oh, one more thing: what reason would Neil have either to lie or at least mislead about cutting a version of any song he wrote regarding band involvement? I figure, even if it’s true that this version is basically a demo with Dr. John’s participation, the country rock-ish feel of what is here (as opposed to the more hard-edged, faster tempos take on Archives Vol. 1) still leads me to believe that these are two different versions entirely. As meticulous as Neil is on who played what on what (and the fact that the original producer/managers of The Herd were opportunistic and did as much as anyone to guarantee that the promise contained in Buffalo Springfield would end up being expressed in other ways ((POCO, CSN(Y), Neil and Stephen’s solo work, etc.)), I’m going to trust Neil’s memory and judgement over others regarding his career. He, after all has been “keeping the receipts”.
