But what if you have really strong winds which lift the bottom edge of the slate up enough to clear the retaining hook? The hook will slip back under the slate because it is still under tension, and the slate can now slide out. Seems to me a lead strip with a more prominent hook over the edge of the slate would be far better...even if it is far more visible.

midland lead is cast and is so horrible to use. you forgot the saddle at the top, and if you are using a 75mm water line you should use 175mm lead. so many school boy errors here .

Some tips that might assist others: I understand that patination oil may cause damage to the rubber upstand so one should be careful when using it. In addition use a water based lubricant or silicone to assist with fitting the flange around the pipe (not washing up liquid as this may caused the deterioration in the rubber)

What about edges of lead flashing above window porches should the vertical sides be sealed or just left to flap?

In a little while environmental extremists will be clamoring for all lead to be removed from roofs because lead ions are contaminating the ground water.

Is it safe to tape the membrane to a single walled flue pipe, would the membrane/roof battens catch fire??

I appreciate you’re trying to sell Patination Oil but I wouldn’t bother. Only time I’ve ever used it is above a conservatory roof to stop a white stain on glass. Other than that I’ve never seen the point ?
