I understand exactly what you are saying..After a 10 day migraine/ stroke , I found I could read the words, but couldn’t comprehend the meaning behind them. I could not make the pictures in my mind that imprinted those words..into my memory. You MUST be able to do this to understand what you are reading. Otherwise it is like reading a foreign language phonetically, but the words have no meaning. I fear, with the technology and loss of physically shaping of the words by handwriting words…the connections are becoming lost.. I encourage my grandsons to read books, imagining the characters. I also encourage them to journal their thoughts ; write them down ( teaching them cursive) . Computers are both a help…..but also a hindrance…. So are calculators.
