You don't have to worry about ANY plant being invasive in the desert environment except mexican evening primrose. I finally got rid of all of it in a couple of years.

Another VERY invasive plant is Mint! The owners before us, had a few small mint plants on the side of the house, which I thought was kind of cool at first... But now? It has completely taken over, choked out every other plant and is interfering with our heat/ air conditioning pump. It seems like once I get it cut back, It doubles in size over night. Bad news...

I would say the thing that surprised me the most was pruning it. I do cut them back in the fall within a couple inches of the ground. And I let the old vine dry on the trellis. Once it dries I pull it off But i've never pruned mine during spring through fall. All 4 of mine go crazy in the spring giving so many blooms. And I just figured when they quit putting new buds and blooming, that the next step in the cycle was just being green and letting its roots grow deeper.

I have had clematis for years, but the question for me is what kind do I have. There are bell shaped purple blue vigorous bloomers, and two purple large flowering bloomers which I never cut back but the plants are spindly and don't produce many flowers. There are not many vines from the ground coming up to the trellis. These I have never cut back because the step seem woody. The bell shaped I cut back to the ground in the Spring and they bloom for weeks so this year I will try cutting them back after that first bloom. The last one I have is a Josephine and it only has ever had two vines up from the root and blooms very little. What do I do with this one to get it be lush and throw out more blooms? One I have may be a Jackmini I think and that has the same leggy appearance, how and when should this one be pruned? Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

@@karengreene4476 Do you know the name of your clematis, what type it is? That will determine when to prune. Is it a Montana, in which case it probably wont need pruning except to keep it from growing and taking over. they are the most vigorous of all of them. Are you in the UK? If so, there's a really good site called Thorncroft clematis that has information on all of them and the most fantastic supply of clematis. They need their roots in the shade and their tops in the sun preferably.

I planted wisteria and loved seeing it bloom every spring, until I learned the awful truth by accident. Driving down the highway, I began to notice beautiful wisteria blooms covering dead, 40 foot trees. The thought of my own wisteria smothering my Japanese maples and dogwoods nearly made me hysterical. I knew that it the root systems ever became intertwined, it was game over. I'd never get rid of it. I cut the wisteria, poisoned the wisteria, and dug up roots that ran for 20 feet. Years later, I was still finding new wisteria growth from the smallest of root fragments. It was like playing wack-a-mole.

Thank you! I learned some new things today. Not sure why, but my late mother, would prep a bed, with a relatively flat and smooth surface. Then she'd just drop zinnia seed here and there...and lightly PRESS them into the topsoil, not even covering them, with dirt. Beautiful zin̈nias....go figure.

Buddleja has so many subspecies and only the davidii self seeds. However, here in the UK, more research has discovered amazing benefits of the plant. It can only seed in poor soil and that is because it is a pioneer plant that actively improves soil. As it improves the soil, other plants appear. As the soil improves the plant will die and then self seeds to improve soil elsewhere. So not only provides nectar for bees and butterflies but a soil improver. I have a large collection of buddleja species including three davidii and yet have never found it to be invasive at all and I live in the countryside here. It is only seen alongside railway tracks and stations and in similar poor soil areas. So not invasive at all just an unjustified bad reputation.

Goes to show that introducing plants (or any other living thing for that matter) based solely on appearance and ability to thrive/serve a purpose under certain circumstances is a BAD IDEA. I'm in Minnesota, and the invasives list here includes many that seed/plant catalogs encouraged us to buy 30 years ago. Better to stick to old fashioned varieties whose behaviors have been observed for generations, or get an expert opinion BEFORE you plant.

Don't plant ivy unless you have the time to upkeep and restrain it! It can look very nice in a potted plant grouping, but if you put it in your shady bed, don't turn your back! The same is true for virginia creeper, japanese honeysuckle, vinca major and pepper vine. All fine-looking plants, but vigorous spreaders.
