I grew in pots and in the ground last year. The tubers from the pots I dug up at the end of the season were huge. The ground much smaller.

Just discovered your channel and have been binge watching. Burning question: What was your final decision regarding the dahlias in the grow bags? Is this something you might do again? Thanks so much for the great educational videos!

So glad I found this video! I'm in zone 9a ( Southern Louisiana) and I was going to try and grow in raised beds this year. With our hurricane outlook, I'm now thinking grow bags so I can move them if absolutely necessary ( 16 varieties...so let's hope not lol). I do worry about our heat cooking the roots through the bags ...but we do get a lot of rain normally so that's something I'm thinking about. Also...just curious...what soil/ compost do you used for your raised beds????? I would love to know.

Don't they sell planting fabric with precut holes? I know nothing about gardening, but it seems like you could get it with holes spaced out from the manufacturer.

Hi Gena, Thanks for watching! There are some products like that for home gardeners, but on a farm-scale, no. We use a heavy-weight landscape fabric that is 6 ft wide (the only pre-burned ones I'm aware of are only 4 ft wide), and then we burn the holes at the spacing that's appropriate for the variety of what we're planting. That 4' pre-burned fabric is also much, much more expensive, and that makes it unfeasible for our farm. Burning fabric is a pretty easy chore, and it can be reused for many years.

Thank you for the articulate explanation of the difference between burnout and depression! I definitely had burnout last year in my job, so I switched positions, reset some boundaries, and was able to rediscover my "why!" ❤😊

That's fantastic, Denise! ❤️ It sounds so simple to create and reinforce boundaries, but it's actually one of the more difficult practices for most of us. Certainly makes all the difference, though!

That was a fun video. Your flowers are so beautiful and look so healthy. Yes, fall is fast approaching. Here in NW Iowa, we just started harvesting our soybeans. My vegetable garden is winding down and the evenings are getting cooler.

Thanks for watching, Barb! Definitely different from our normal vlogs, but we wanted to try to capture some of the memories of the season that meant the most to us because these are the things we don't want to forget as time marches on. And it seems to do that faster and faster every year! Onward to autumn! Wishing you a wonderful harvest!

I do this every year. I put fence posts in my tomato cages so they don't fall over with the weight of the tomatoes. My old fence pounder worked better but that got to old so now I have a newer one.

Let's not forget the wild bees! A few hundred wild bees can pollinate an entire apple orchard which would require many thousands of honey bees. Because the wild bee only does specific plants, like a lock and key.

Thank you so much for watching, and for encouraging us, Jan! You are such a light in the world! So glad that you enjoyed our conversation about where we're at in the season too...it's a difficult thing to cut the ties to our expectations for what we wanted the farm to be this year, but we're confident that it will help us next year with everything we're planning and growing in the next season! Lots more on the way! ❤️

…And on the 7th day God rested! Thank you for your encouragement! I have been guilty of not trying because of thinking a project is either to big or not knowing all the details. And we have been conditioned into instant gratification. I have had to learn to slow down but not be lazy or give up. I am cheering you on in this great adventure!!!

Can we grow 96 dahlias in grow bags? 👨‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾 This is an experiment for us this year, but as first-year flower farmers, we feel like now is the time to take these risks and see what works. We put approximately a quarter of our dahlia crop into this trial, and we have some early results over on the blog now (or watch the full episode on our channel)! www.frenchcreekfarmhouse.com/2023/07/planting-dahlias-in-grow-bags.html
