"That wasn't fun at all".... yet we still keep going out for more:) I love this example learning wind sport. It was the same with windsurfing except the reward to suffering ratio was even less favorable. Now we all get to start again with wingfoiling but at least we know what to expect. If you had started kiting about 15 years earlier, this footage would have been even more frustrating/frightening. The early generation C-kites did not relaunch well and lacked much depower. Relaunching often required aggressive swimming toward the kite to put slack in the lines and hopefullly get it to roll onto it's side and then it was a small miracle if it actually took, to he air....many of us became very proficient at self rescue. I think it was around 2005 when the current, swept back leading edge style kites came around. I recall first flying a Cabrinha Crossbow in 2006, instantly the sport seemed so much easier and safer.

I know this wasn’t for the 120 but I’m a heavier rider 230-240# and curious if the stiffer frame might help even if I’m more of a novice-intermediate rider. I ride in the Midwest, not much chunk compared to out west or east (not much elevation either!) but I’ve got an older 5010 I like, but always looking for something and one popped up for sale 2022…curious your thoughts! Thanks in advance…also, what other bike have you fallen for now?
@houseofdyer
@houseofdyer 9 ай бұрын
I’d say typically that middle of the road is good for most riders. So like a short travel (I.e. 120) would be fine for most things - especially in the Midwest - but if you fall in love with it and want to ride chunkier stuff, you will eventually want a 135 or a 140 rear, imo. In fact, that’s ultimately what drove me to the Arktos. My Ripley was perfect - I just wanted a bit more rear travel for things like bike parks, road trips, and Apex (a super chunky trail here in Colorado). Anyway, I hope that helps. I would hold out for more of a trail travel (130-150ish) than a short travel (100-120 rear) or downhill travel (170+ front). The new bike is a Pivot Switchblade and it’s a little more forgiving and predictable than the Arktos, IMO. My buddy is happily riding the Arktos, still, though.

Great detailed video my guy! It's nice to get some perspective from the beginning of the buying process all the way to now. I live in Phoenix and am considing this very same bike, though most likely the GX build since it's more within my price point. I am 5'9 and am not sure if a Medium or Large would be best for me. How is the bike treating you to this day? Are you still happy with it? Have you had to reach out to Alchemy Customer Care for anything? Thanks in advance and happy holidays!

When I lived inland and tried kitesurfing on lakes I ended up giving up. I had a few OK sessions but it was always a struggle dealing with the inconsistent wind on the lakes. Great lakes would be an exception because of the size. It all came together when I moved to the coast and found consistent wind almost every day.

One reviewer said the suspension felt too stiff/ harsh at low speeds and this was a better bike for more aggressive riders. What has been your experience at lower speeds with harshness?
@houseofdyer
@houseofdyer Жыл бұрын
Hey Todd, I couldn't agree more. This bike is very stiff, and rewards aggressiveness. If you're the type of rider who sees a big, bony rock garden and slows down, then the Arktos isn't the best, IMO -- it's so stiff that it gets a little squirelly when you slow down. But if you see a big, bony rock garden and think "let 'er rip!" then this bike will reward your lack of fear like no other bike I've ever ridden. It makes super gnarly tech sections really fun.

It definitely feels small and agile, but also stable as long as you are riding fast and kind of aggressive. I noticed recently that it punishes fear and hesitancy while rewarding stoke and speed with amazing capability. Let us know when you take one for a ride!

Really like your videos and the Arktos and Ripley are the two bikes I'm considering. How big of an impact do you think it would be if you were on the Arktos 120 when compared to the Ripley? Also, do you feel like the 120 would be enough for CO riding?
@houseofdyer
@houseofdyer 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It depends on what kind of rider you are, in my opinion. The 130/120 on the Ripley was amazing for almost everything in Colorado, including Trestle, for me -- an intermediate rider. I rode Hall Ranch for my test ride and the bike felt great. The only time I ever felt 'underbiked' is on really big, chunky things like Apex, Meyer, and some spots at Floyd. But mostly the reason I went with longer travel was because we kept riding rougher and rougher stuff and it was getting kinda hard on my body to ride fast on the Ripley. We rode Cub Creek the other day and I can't imagine riding that on the Ripley at speed. My shoulders would've fallen out of their sockets and my hands would forever be claws. :) However, the Arktos did great, and it even did great on the climb. That being said, if I had my heart set on a shorter travel and money wasn't an issue, I'd probably choose a M Ripley. It's really a fantastic bike and a great company. Alchemy and the Arktos has been great thus far, but the Ripley felt more stable, precise, and dialed all around. The Arktos demands more but also delivers more, yet hurts less in the longer travel, if that makes any sense. Hope that helps!

I’ve said this a few times in the comments and the description, but I wasn’t alone and had a lot of kite skill on land at this point. Was just new to water. But generally agree that it’s dangerous to go alone and with no training. That’s why I posted the video for people. Take a lesson and go with friends who know what they’re doing. Kiteboarding is dangerous, fun as hell, and super hard to learn on your own in crappy wind. Thanks!
