Serbian governement should raise property taxes. You people destroyed few or markets here, mostly real esatate market. Regular people cant afford rents and house prices because of you. Not to mention you have pretty good tax cuts compared to regular serbians.

I wish that someone would make a cost of living video for all of the Serbian cities like this one as this is really helpful. I've tried to get a realistic idea of the cost of living as my husband are planning to move to Serbia from Canada and I've looked an numbeo but getting feedback from actual people living in Serbia is really helpful too.

Wow, what a different experience. I do agree and I have seen people like that that you reference in the video, but unlike for you that being majority, in my case it was minority. During my work career, these didn't stick out to me as they were usually a minority as I said, but also there is out "polaaaaaako" or take it slowly mentality, which I do support to extent, cause from my side of view, it is about the quality of the work done, not the quantity. Tho I hope things will change for the better soon, some people indeed need to take some things bit more seriously. Cause this minority that I reference, when they slack, they slack to the fullest for 2 or 3 other people collectively...

Just found this post. Your so enlightened and educated , I feel the same about this subject. I bet you got a bashing from the Nationalists Serbs and others. I think the situation over the years from the Ottoman empire is due to the raise of Nationalists in Europe and more recently 1970s the raise in Islamophobia. Recent history of those Serbs and the Bosnian war hurts so much!! So sad and evils of Nationalism should be outlawed, instead of encouraged. Peace, must be defended.

This is a very good commentary, you seem to have a very good grasp of Serbian culture. Like you when I was there recently I sensed a dissonance between the goodness of the people and the disorder reflected by the pervasive graffiti. It’s an odd and interesting city - the people appear attractive, healthy, stylish and happy, and yet the city itself cannot be considered anything but somewhat rundown

My favorite thing about you is your sincerity and objectivity. I can understand why you prefer Thailand over Serbia because I was living in the Philippines where's also tropical climate, very beautiful nature and smiling, positive, kind, polite respectful , welcoming people and in Serbia weather is very bad because in one day can 20 Celsius degrees difference in temperature and it's enough one day to fall rain and you can't swim in outdoor pool or in river but in Thailand you can swim every day in sea or river because it's always hot water and when you walk in Serbia on street you can't see happy and smiling people like in Thailand or anywhere in South East Asia . I hope I will soon move there permanently in the Philippines country i love

“Get working online.” Really? Who will then bake your bread, serve you in restaurants and cafes, maintain your roads and house utilities, etc. You get my point. Working in IT is not a solution, and telling people to work “online” is a self-centered view of the world that benefits no one.

Serbia experienced a large wave of migration from Russia during the civil war of 1917-1920. This wave of Russian migrants integrated into Serbian society without any problems. My Russian great-grandfather passed away in the Serbian village of Taraš in 1982. After the death of his Russian wife, he married a Serbian woman and spoke Serbian fluently, working as a local official. I am sure that doubts about the integration of Russians into the local community are unfounded.

Serbian people would appreciate these Russians to be like their ancestors that helped build and shape modern cities of Serbia. Just look at the last names of some prominent Serbs nowadays, lots are descendants of the white army officers and soldiers as they left westwards under pressure of the red army. Serbian government is the last government in Europe to recognize Soviet Union as a country. Generally Serbs don't like Putin and his oligarchy for who they are and what they stand for, however for some wounds are still very fresh from the 90's and NATO taking sides of the Serbian enemies in the 90's. If Russians want to stay in Serbia for a long time, they would need to speak the language and integrate. How, step by step.

Where can artista get a refuge from this negative impact of gentrification? Los Angeles Arts District tried to sort of have a curator, the leading developers would say how many coffee shops, how many hostels, how many restaurants etc. so the developer can reverse the damage to a certain extent- leaving certain number of spots for art galleries and bookshops. Montana street in Santa Monica, CA probably has some sort of neighborhood council that keeps the rents stable for cinema house or art galleries. So the urban space can be modified by an intelligent developer who can say - ok, this square needs a flower shop, fruit and vegetable store, plus two coffee shops and and a gallery...the developer can do this to try to recreate a street scene by filling it 'with life'. I know there are some protected businesses in Savamala, maybe few will survive. The rest can be done by Belgrade Waterfront. Public space needs life and needs to cater people who are walking - a barbero shop, a tatoo studio, one art cinema. So it's possible. It's just people in BW, not doing their job right.

Ironically I met a Russian doing remote IT work in ... Bangkok. And yes, she had her very small bubble. I am amazed I even met her given the fact I am not Russian. But that is a genuinely cosmopolitan city and the condos mean people stay within it or at least drive in every day. I do wonder about (Old town) Belgrade- I am not sure what it is supposed to be, A tourist attraction? There seem to be a lot of poor people struggling with the higher cost of living (everywhere) who look like they want to be elsewhere. You have the young middle classes who of course are the happiest and most insufferable. Everyone I speak to says there are no jobs here you have to work remotely from a richer country to live here. Ok, so why not live in one of the other major Serbian cities? I liked the more relaxed vibe of Nis or Novi Sad if you just want to sit in front of your computer and go out for a coffee now and then. In any case, the immediate surroundings of where you live and shop are what matters. Then I see the community spirit and the strength of the place.

This is the biggest Western propaganda I have ever seen. After everything the West has done to Serbs and Belgrade, these bastards have the nerve to try and make it seem that Serbs and Russians aren’t the closest of brothers! The idiots they picked don’t even know the reasons for why Russia and Serbia are brothers. Maybe instead of spreading a false narrative, you should learn the history about the two countries and peoples. Idiot says he doesn’t see the difference between USA and Russia. Dafuq???? There are still clear reminders of what the USA did to Serbia, to Belgrade, to the Serbians. You know, the damn bombing of Belgrade by the US and its NATO vassals. Everywhere the US influences always ends up bad for the country and its people. Everywhere Russia influences always becomes better! 🇷🇺❤🇷🇸 Russian and Serbians are and will always be Orthodox Christian brothers! And what type of horseshit lie that Putin made a law that allows a man to beat his wife? That is by far the biggest bullshit I have heard.

Here is a food thought for you: If Serbia bombed Russian people inside, for years, was close to Russia and threatening to attack Crimea, put nuclear weapons. Then yes, Russia would have right to defend itself. As for Russian people that came, from my experience, they are very friendly. People think Serbians are friendly and like to socialize but that's not true. Russians are much more open to have parties etc. They will integrate sooner or later, and those that want to go to EU will go and its better for us to go, they just left us a bunch of money.

Russians are welcome here. And yes, they will add to Serbian society. As for your comments "Russia is big because it has imperial mindset", wrong, they are from Siberia where no one lives, just like tiny Denmark rules great Greenland. Also, Russian language is native in what communists call "Ukraine", Russian land stolen by the west.

Prices for real estate are going up everywhere in Europe, it just so happened that Russians came to Serbia and people are blaming them for the rising prices. They would have gone up anyway. In neighboring Croatia people are complaining about how much rent and buying prices have gone up, and they had no influx of Russians in Zagreb that Belgrade had. And if you think it’s bad in Belgrade, just go to Prague where people aren’t complaining about 3,000-4,000 euros per square meter in the center, but 6,000-8,000 euros per square meter, because the entire historic downtown has been turned into an outdoor Airbnb. There’s a global phenomenon right now of inflation, and Serbia is not immune to it. And the Russians who came to Belgrade are not to blame. In Moscow and cities across Russia people are complaining about prices going up for real estate, and that’s despite the mass exodus of Russians since the war started and sanctions. Hell, even in Kyiv, prices are up, despite the country in an active war. People need to stop blaming the Russians who came for general inflation which has been going on since Covid and have nothing to do with Russians.

Very well said, Belgrade does need a shakeup and an influx of cosmopolitan energy which it had, and was known for, 10 plus years ago. The irony is, young progressive Russian immigration can help in that regard, to re-establish something gone under influence of pro-official Russian propaganda here over years.

I'm Russian who moved not to Belgrade, but rather to a smaller town in Vojvodina. Here the situation is quite different from Belgrade or Novi Sad: there are a few dozen of us, most came with families and children, most bought some real estate. So, we're integrating pretty well, learning the language at least to some extent; socializing with neighbors and other Serbs; children are going to local schools and are basically completely integrated at this point; etc., etc. The vast majority of people, though, don't work in Serbia and have their sources of income either internationally or still in Russia. Also, the language barrier, I would say, is still pretty high. You don't need good language skills to resolve day to day problems, conduct business (especially if the other party has a financial interest), etc. Still, the Russian community here is small, it's spread very wide, and there's basically no other way than to integrate or live your life as an absolute mute loner. As for Belgrade and Novi Sad, most Russians who came to Serbia live there, of course. Out of hundreds of thousands, only about 30k have acquired residence permits. And only a portion of those will probably be aiming at permanent residence permits and citizenship. The rest mostly don't have any specific plans for their future at all, Serbia they view as a temporary hub, they're just kinda hanging on that rope atop the void, waiting for something to happen to them next. My thought on this is: those guys who left Russia in 1917 intending to wait out a few years until the reds collapsed and they could return - they had a pretty long wait. Most of them collapsed before the reds did, and the rest basically wasted the time of their lives on who-knows-what.

Serbian here. With this massive cultural hegemony USA has imposed onto the world thanks to the rise of internet, Russian replacing my language is the least of my worries.
