People call these people outsiders yet look at Edward Bernays. Man thought and created democracy.

Since "outsider art" has become popular in recent decades, it looks like the creator of this doc doesn't have a firm handle on what constitutes "outsider art". For example: Joe Coleman's art is overly hip and has a graphic novel aesthetic that makes it "cool", but it's not authentic "outsider" work. It's too marketable.

Self-taught artist here. I worked as a director in a large Plein Air group. The artists who seemed to have the hardest time appreciating their own and the work of others were the most highly educated. They were filled with so many rules from their Fine Arts educations, the joy of painting was squeezed right out! I like to think I was taught to create by child I was - she taught me the joy of expression! Guess whose paintings sold! 😅

WE USED TO HAVE MORE DAYS IN THE WEEK. "For centuries the Romans used a period of eight days in civil practice, but in 321 CE Emperor Constantine established the seven-day week in the Roman calendar and designated Sunday as the first day of the week." - Britannica

"Outsider art" is created outside the gallery system.Usually be people who didn't go to art school. However once the "outsider" becomes famous you'll find that they make that artist an insider pretty quick.

C'mon people let's get real: all true artists are in their own way social outsiders who create outsider art. And conversely all artists produce insider art: art comes from within [self/society] and without [self/society]. These guys need to stop acting so preciously dumbfounded. It's disingenuous. The third fool here feigns ignorance, positing that perhaps the term means art produced literally out of doors! Plein air mon cher? Get on fools! These guys can be found clinging to Banksy's ankles as he/she/they drags them down the streets of London. The haute culture art world is making a mockery of the value/worth of art. These three, by holding dear to their false solicitous 'mystery', are feeding right into the capitalist-pig agenda of the art auction houses by raising the value via "absence makes the heart grow fonder."

Somehow, the people who seem like the real outsiders to me are the ones who don't have a creative urge, or don't act on it. I kind of want to see a documentary on them now.

The artists are exploited. Its incredibly sad what ''art dealers'' will do to make their money. That's the reality of the situation that no one talks about. The people who make the art are incredibly special. All the other people in this picture are pieces of garbage.

I really miss the Museum of Everything. I also loved the Folk Art Museum which tended to travel around the UK and have pop up exhibitions. Why London doesn't have a dedicated folk art, history and outsider art museum space I will NEVER understand. It's a shameful thing and enormously disappointing. Why don't any rich art folks, people responsible for attracting government funding and general fundraisers and academic bodies alike seem to think this empty space in our art and cultural world worthy of immediate remedy?

Question to everybody and anybody: What would you call those 'dot' paintings churned out en masse by Damian Hirst's production crew, the ones that he puts his signature on as the finishing touch before shipping off to wealthy buyers/galleries? Is that art? How? I'm confused and would love to read what other people privately believe.

It is sad if not infuriating to think that outsider art is only appreciated, validated within the 'art scene' in so far as when the elite and wealthy dilettantes deem it so. You see this pattern repeated throughout history. Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime and was almost professionally forgotten, yet a century and a half later his paintings are worth millions and you cannot find an art history book that does not mention his name. It is unfortunate to think that our contemporary art scene is still primarily based on monetary gain and prestige. That is why it is important to support local artists and galleries....
