Yeah, one of the things I love about Chicago is that despite being a big city race the start area has plenty of space and doesn’t feel super chaotic. I had time to drop my bag, hit the porta-potty and walk to the corral, but not much else as I don’t like a lot of waiting around. Hope you have a great race!

Not technical at all really - everything was quite runnable. I think it could be quite a fast course if someone wanted to really put the hammer down. There’s so much great running in the area, I’m going back next weekend for the Centurion Chiltern Wonderland 50 miler 😊

Yeah a very small amount of paved road - the vast majority is crushed gravel and there are a few very nice sections of single track trail too. Very runnable throughout (we accidentally spent the first few hours on target for a 7hr finish before we reined it in a bit 😅)

I aim to please 😅. If my GoPro hadn’t died during the 2022 Thames Path 100 you’d have been treated to 40+ miles of me fantasising in great detail about how comfy the taxi ride home was going to be 😆.

Ah you'll have a great experience! There's a large group that does the backwards run in the middle of the night rather than the early morning, and I expect it would be really fun to do it with them, but I aimed to get to the start with just enough time to change and turn right around so that I didn't get too cold, stiff, etc. If I was going to do it again I might give myself time for a McDonalds breakfast in between! The main thing to think about is carrying food and drink for your first leg, and I brought my drop bag in my pack so that I could drop it off and lose the extra weight for the second half. It is really easy to get lost in Canary Wharf because your GPS will be useless, so pay attention in that section :) Let me know how it goes!

@@runjamesrun cheers! There's a group of Bad Boy Runners doing it and we're setting off at 2am. Some are just doing the backwards, so they can take kit etc to save carrying it forwards. Really looking forward to it! 👍

I think their main concerns are not wanting any professional footage (because they've sold the rights to that) and preserving the safety of runners (because selfie sticks and people not looking where they're going are a real hazard). I didn't hide my GoPro, but I didn't flash it around either -- it was in the waistband I carry my gels and other goodies in. I just use the little handheld grip, not one of those telescoping sticks. There were several other folks with GoPros around, but I didn't see any full gimbal setups. My advice would definitely be to follow the rules, but if you choose not to, my experience was that the security guys seemed to be looking for weapons and explosives rather than cameras, so you'll probably be OK. Whatever you decide, I hope you have a fantastic race -- it is one of my absolute favourites!!

I was a little concerned they might take my camera, but I've lived up to this race for so long now, had it deferred last year, I definitely want to film it. I saw the rules mention no video, so emailed the marathon itself, they replied with a copy paste of the lines from the rules. :-) It's my third Major and have my fourth coming up (NY) so want to document that journey for sure. Thanks for your help, it's made me a bit less worried now.
