That scene crosses a lot of lines and a lot of families and even reminds me of when I was younger going through life and watching the outcomes. Some were positive, some were negative but we just never give up. That scene to me never gets old

At the risk of sounding clichéd, I'd say that the purpose of the scene is to imply the clear mummy issues the protagonist has. It's clearly implied also that he's homosexual from his fixation being on a much older theatre actress.

Excellent film especially if you appreciate great acting and writing. Jason Patric should have received an Oscar nomination for this though I expect the content put many voters off. Of all the scenes in the movie this one is the one I remember the most. Chilling. I had a similar reaction to the last scene in In the Company of Men, La Bute's previous film.

Why show only an excerpt, I would love to see the whole movie. With such outstanding star-actors as Angela Lansbury, Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, David Niven and Peter Ustinov, who can say no to this great whodunit with enough intrigue to keep one going from start to finish.
