Pennyshot is pretty much buckshot with reduced range. It makes close range kills more consistent but almost halves your maximum one shot distance compared to buckshot. It's a beginner/bad aim oriented choice. Slug is the opposite where it can actually increase your range to one hit but you need good aim. So essentially your best options are as follows. Really Bad Aim = Pennyshot, Bad-Mid Aim = Buckshot, and Average Aim or Higher = Slug

When I was seriously getting into hunt running the crossbow with hand crossbow with choke and poison bolts. That load out saved me from bankruptcy lol. The default bolts were all I needed since I was always surprised with how far I could one shot hunters to the chest. Using it was a fun time the only reason I stopped was because I honestly just got tired of using the same load-out for almost a year. It served me really well when I used it though
