Why did people not like him? Sure, he's a braggart and wanta-be, but don't a lot of people want to be hero's. His dad is a big deal and Wyll is in his the shadow. He feels small. Warlock is a popular class, and it's for those with no talent that want to be more, so it's safe to say he is like tons of people out there. He is relatable to all those warlock players.

I’ve only ever played current BG3, I didn’t even know Wyll had a different VA. Obviously I’m going to have bias for current Wyll but I’m sure people back then had bias for that Wyll. I definitely like his VA better now, I think his old story is very interesting though. Wyll is the only companion who actually through and through seems like a good person, if he was still like this then none of the companions would seem like the Lawful Good perspective we need. Gale and Karlach both are good people but have legitimate character flaws. Wyll is supposed to be “the best of us”. This Wyll is dope but feels more like Astarion and Shadowheart and Gale

This version of Wyll is an actually pretty complex character, where you feel a mixture of unease (there's something he's not sharing, and he seems to have a bit of an inflated ego and a savior complex, he enjoys wielding power) and trust (he seems to have his heart in the right place, he does fight and use the power he has to protect the weak and/or the innocent). In the final release, he doesn't really convince me very much - his story seems rushed and like it lacks flesh, so he is a much flatter and duller Blade of Frontiers. I guess the people who didn't like EA Wyll were the ones who shouted the loudest (and sadly, were heard), whereas people who found him interesting didn't feel the need to point it out as much. It is a strange decision in an otherwise amazing game. Both Lanre Malaolu and Theo Solomon performed amazingly as voice actors. Malaolu's performance really brought out the struggles Wyll has with his own duality. And Theo gave release-version Wyll more soul than the re-written character had on paper.

Why is this version of Wyll so charming and sexy. That romance scene was sooo good!! And i really feel empathy for his character and the stakes at hand. Oh this is really hurtful to watch knowing it is not in the final product.

I'd like to know why they changed him. He was so much more interesting. It's not Theo Solomon's voice, it's his direction!! Poor Wyll is as dry as a leaf on the ground.

Blame Early Access fans. They complained so much about EA Wyll. Larian scarped this concept.

I'll play devil's advocate (ha-ha) and go against the grain. I prefer the ideas of the current Wyll more than those of EA: simply because EA Wyll has a lot (too much?) in common with Astarion and Gale, I think it would have been redundant in the game to have another character who deals with deep traumas (like Astarion) or with a female villain who has chained him and with a dark side (like Gale). I like that, together with Karlach, he has become a more "quiet" character in the middle of a mentally messed up party. I also like that with the full-release Wyll they wanted to (at least in theory) address the father-son relationship and the relationship with one's true Self (or the true, human Wyll) and with the external mask (the Frontier-Blade with inhuman standards), and how the latter can suffocate the former. It would have been nice to delve a bit deeper into Ulder, always on the subject of the father-son bond: from some descriptions of objects and diaries, the idea was that Ulder wanted to be a good father to Wyll, but the loss of Francesca (his wife and Wyll's mom) and coming from a poor and unloving father doesn't help Ulder to become one to the full extent (a good dad, I mean). There is no need for there to be something excessively dark behind every change, after all, even Faerun is full of good people and without huge traumas. The only thing that makes me sad is that Larian decided this direction too late and had to rush the development of the new Wyll: if the change had been taken in time, they would have had more time to develop these ideas properly. PS. I also think that Wyll's two central themes could be linked: would he try to be the Blade of the Frontier, willing to sacrifice himself even in a toxic way, because he subconsciously only wants the affection of the only family he knows, his father? If so, it would have been nice if the end of his quest was him realizing that "ok, dad loves me because I'm his son, even if he has a hard time showing it. My friends love me because I'm Wyll: I like being good and doing good, but if it hurts me it's no longer okay". PPS. Since there are so many people out there who appreciate EA Wyll, I wonder: if a good portion of the fanbase appreciated it, then why was it changed?

I never played EA, and Wyll is still my fave companion post-EA/whatever the current version is called...but damn, this is a really interesting route for him. I feel bad for the VA, it sounds like he was having a blast performing Wyll.

Some of the actors took a long time to grow into their characters - brutally honest but I hate how Wyll and Laezel are voiced here but in the release versions I think their actors did an outstanding job. The goblin at the windmill and Raphael sounded amazing already. I'm no actor but I guess it can take time for you to resonate with your character or even for the direction to point you in the right way, if that way is even decided at that point.

Damn, I really like EA Wyll. I know this is a super late comment, but I've been playing the game since release and while I love Wyll, I have similar issues with his character that others have. He's just underdeveloped and a little flat. I wanted to see what he was like beforehand and I really like him here. I wish we could know what they originally had planned for him!

Would that we could have had THIS Wyll instead. Sadge. Truly, he would have been an amazing choice for a canon main character. Pulled into so many directions - the mistrust of the Flaming Fist, his hate for the goblins and his cruel streak, his desire for Mizora, the tender feelings he has for Tav - his story could have been so much more interesting. I might have to write fanfic about him lol

Interesting how the voice actor was playing Wyll with a much lower class accent in EA. He sounds a bit like a low class guy from Coventry instead of the rich boy speaking RP like he did in the main release.

I think everyone here is just contrarian and blind. Nothing about this Wyll is particularly interesting or deep and it honestly doesn't even work that well. He feels completely disconnected from the plot, he has a terrible accent and all the "edge" he has is "muh revenge" and being less tolerant towards evil-doers (as if he isnt that still in the final game). Making Wyll the son of Duke Ravengard, making Mizora actually serve Zariel and thus add some layers to Karlach and Wyll's connection, making him a hero but also rejected and despised by the father and city he loved, those are good qualities. This plot point actually integrates him into the main plot of the game much better. The final conflict of either staying a slave to the devils or saving his father who never appreciated him for who he was had some good drama to it. I take that over generic "I was a poor thief, wanted revenge, made a deal with the devil and am a sort of fraud hero" arc. And yeah he is more straightforwadly "good" in the final game, but so what? Is there actually anything wrong with having a Good alignement character down on his luck around? He still butts heads with Astarion, he will straight up turn on an evil party that tries to raid the grove and he would go to hell itself to help Karlach by the end of the game.

So many people are saying they like this Wyll more but I much prefer the Wyll we ended up with. Yeah this one is more Chaotic and sassy, but we already got plenty of that in characters that are already widely loved. To me, this Wyll feels like a dumpster for recycled character traits and lines from multiple other characters, Astarion’s ego, Karlach’s chaotic energy, Lae’zel’s overconfidence, Shadowheart’s terrible inability to keep past secrets hidden, every time he talks I just see things from characters that we already have. The Wyll we ended up with may not have as many layers, but he feels much more all his own to me, and I like that much much more.

Early Access Wyll makes me so sad because it's very clear Larian have a bias against him. No other character would get completely scratched and rewritten right before release just to never get properly finished despite constant updates for the entire year after release. Fact he got almost 5 hours less content than other characters and hardest romance to trigger due to no scene in act 1 is hard to excuse considering how much content others got post-release and the way Theo is treated by both devs and fandom. Atp it feels like Larian regrets putting him into the game and that's depressing.
