As an Oblate of Buckfast Abbey since 2015 and before that of Elmore Abbey, starting in 1990, may I express my genuine thanks for this video. It is an excellent introduction not only to Quarr Abbey, but also to the Benedictine life. May God bless you all.

What does an Oblate do?
@Mike.o.s.b

Hello Stuart. Thank you for your enquiry. An Oblate is a member of a Religious Community (most monasteries and convents have either Oblates or Tertiaries) who are affiliated to a particular monastery or convent and live their lives closely following the Rule of St. Benedict, or if Franciscan, the rule of St. Francis. They live and work in the secular world, living a version of the monastic life that they have worked out and decided upon with the Oblate Master of the monastery they wish to belong to. They are also under the guidance of the Oblate Master and also of the Abbot of the monastery at all times. I hope that helps. God bless

It is indeed a pleasure insurmountable to be a guest at Quarr Abbey the community of monks are a wonder to behold and their hospitality and graciousness beyond belief. Father Nicholas is a wonder of information and enlightenment and I thank him for his time devotion and patience during my stay. I cannot thank the community enough for accepting me I to their dwelling. I am deeply humbled and enriched by my stay here at Quarr. God bless.

I was looking at some old postcards of the abbey church and I am saddened to notice the altar has had its three steps and reredos removed. I can't see why it was removed. Other Solesmes houses like Abbey of Notre-Dame, Fontgombault have not vandalized themsleves. In Benedictine life continuity is important.

I visited in 2007 for a wonderful week. I decided not to try my vocation there because of the abbot's antipathy to the Tridentine Mass. (DOM Cuthbert). And from witnessing pigs being killed in front of others. It was nevertheless a wonderful inspiring week . Sadly I went to Farnborough which was a huge mistake. Oh dear oh dear.

God chooses the place He wants us, whether it is to our taste or not! The religious life is undertaken to share Christ’s cross in a particular way, not necessarily of our choice.

I met Brother Francis when I visited Quarr Abbey in 2008. I reminded him that I worked with him in abbey kitchen in 1971 when I was a postulent monk, and he was then the cook. He didn't remember me of course after such a time, but he did say that it was not the same now, as there were only 8 monks left, and other matters concerning the decline of numbers, which I cannot go into here. I did however notice he still had that sense of humour and humility he had when I first met him. God bless his soul.

it's very nice to see Quarr again. i stayed there during Lent, in 1972, i think. My stay there was a very important step on my own personal journey. Had some great chats with the Brother in charge of guests, walked the grounds, attended the full round of services in church every day, and came to some better understanding of what to do next. Thank you, Quarr.

I was by the Grace of God allowed to visit for a week when I was at my lowest ebb and within this Holy place I experienced the power of our Lord and the Love of our Father through the Brothers and the holiness of this place. I am not an educated man with the ability to speak fine words but I know our Lord Jesus taught us how we should live and the monks at Quarr live that way and offer people such as I true Christian love and hope.

I can see that your Divine Office sounds the same, but your Novus Ordo liturgy is different than many Solesmes monasteries.

For the love of God and the liturgy, get rid of that awful communion table and restore the ad orientem high altar. Compare the wonderful sanctuary at Farnborough.

The altar doesn't have to have a reredos to be a real altar and to be used for ad orientem celebration. Compare altars at Fontgombault and Le Barroux Abbeys. They're both freestanding. Also, most altars in Rome are freestanding. Eastern Rite altars are also freestanding.
@AveChristusRex
@AveChristusRex 2 жыл бұрын
@@cunjoz The point is that freestandingness has become synonymous with 'because there needs to be proom for the priest behind the altar to face the people.' Whereas the priest never faced the people.
