Ganz wunderbar.

I've especially loved this closing allegro since I first heard it about 50 years ago. Steinberg generates tremendous drama and excitement, yet he makes you believe his fast (is there a faster one in any recording?) tempo is just the right one. I've had two or three copies on lp. It's probably heresy, but I prefer the sound on the old MCA cd to the new DG. Thanks very much for this post.

This is the greatest Eroica I've ever heard, and pulsates throughout like none other, capturing and conveying Beethoven's high-energy like no one else. Typical of Swarowsky, this performance conveys a falling-forward MOMENTUM and energy that NO other conductor does. Also, in the Funeral March 2nd Mvt., ONLY Vaclav Neumann is in Swarowsky's league. This is the definitive Eroica. I think that Beethoven hearing it would say "AT LAST!!"

A more trechant soprano I've never heard. Sutherland, perhaps.

Compare this interpretation with Klaus Makela's, and you definitely will understand why recently, Classical music as a performing art is going to hell...

For me Crass was the premier German operatic lyric bass from the 1960s until the late ˋ70s when hearing problems compromised his career. A wonderfully beautiful Italianate timbre & a range which enabled him to score in roles ranging The Dutchman, Sarastro, & Osmin even. Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Wagner + even a bit of Verdi. I wonder if he recorded live or in the studio any Loewe Balladen.

Being proudly South African, I am immensely proud of Mimi Coertze at approx. 1;15;18 - no soprano these days can do justice to that passage- and that is achieved after 1: 15 mins of singing a big chorus and orchestra! Brava Mimi!

What a powerful, focused voice. Great orchestral support, who is it? Her teeth are unusually shaped. Is it possible that has an effect on producing that wonderful sound?
