Taking off from PE in south Africa, going thru the clouds, left wing gets a lighting strick, huge bamm, not a sound all round, as we get above the storm pilot comes on "surely you guys noticed the lightning strick, no worries folks, enjoy the flight"...

"... as a stricken Virgin Atlantic jet is forced to make an emergency crash landing" Sarah, this was not a "crash landing"; it technically _was_ an emergency landing, but in reality a bit more than precautionary. The pilots had to avoid putting pressure on the side of the aircraft with malfunctioning landing gear bogie, and did that perfectly. Then the rescue teams supported the side where the bogie failed to extend with a glorified jack one would use to change tires, and the emergency was over.

Now, this is the most professionally performed emergency landing I ever saw. It is amazing how sufficient but not overly detailed information and clear and composed instructions from the crew keeps passengers relatively calm - no screaming, no running around like headless chicken. Well done, Virgin!
