I see many people that say they overland on a budget but not at my level. I am a budget and I highly recommend ICECO I use the APL55 but wish i had a bit smaller one. There was 4 items i didn't skimp on. 1. Rig (GX470) but i got a hella good deal (under 10k). 2. RTT even better deal under 1k in it Ikamper skycamp 2.0, about to trade for a 23zero armadillo A2 because mine is too big. 3. Tires I run Falken or Toyo only ( I worked at a jeep shop for years and sold tires and saw them abused. I wont run anything else. 4. Fridge & Power. I use Bluetti power bank with Solar and off-grid no solar it runs my fridge and lights for a week.

Nice video and the chuck box looks great. While i dont do truck camping, my work takes me the entire length of the east coast and as far west as Arkansas. On some of my trips i pack a ‘kitchen’ with much of what you shower in this video. I take a liquid fuel Coleman stove rather than propane, but virtually all the items you have in your pack, i keep in mine. If i can offer a suggestion to add to your list (although it wont fit in your chuck box) is a pressure cooker. I have a 6 qt (the smallest size) made of aluminum, so it’s not very heavy. It can seriously expand the number of dishes and recipes you can make on the road. Pulled pork from raw in about 50-60 minutes. I opt for that instead of the Dutch oven cuz when im on the road, I’m working, so time for meals is precious. Again, great video.

Thank you! And I've heard of a lot of folks using the pressure cookers. Seems like a great multifunctional piece of kit. Might have to try one out in the future. I appreciate the comment!

This is a nice tidy solution for a truck kitchen. Simple and effective. I use backpacking gear as my foundation, cooked with a Solo wood stove for 15 years. Just bought one of those sheet metal backpacking wood stoves that collapse flat. Finicky to setup but easier to cook with than the Solo. Main drawback is it doesn't keep the coals from the surface below like the Solo does, but not hard to find a rock or sandy patch or sheet of metal. I mostly boil water for all my cooking, don't do much frying. Thick soups are cheap and easy and filling and can be whatever flavor and texture you want. I like the Huel yellow coconut curry hot meal as a base, add walnuts, beans, avo oil, spices, soy sauce, when not interested in making one from scratch. I like the versatility of the dutch oven but it adds quite a lot of iron to the food and men aren't suppossed to supplement with iron. Stainless steel all the way for me, even with the potential sticking when frying. Cooking right in the coals of a campfire is fun too, ash cakes are good. Skewers, clay wrap, leaf wrap, steam pit, all sorts of fine campfire techniques. Pour over coffee is great, been my main way for years. Switching back to the aeropress, more efficient use of the grounds in full immersion and it removes those oils that raise blood pressure that french press exposes you too. Fast too, pour over is relatively quick but can take a while to drain. Aeropress forces it out.
@HeyJonMoore
@HeyJonMoore 11 күн бұрын
Thank you! Those sound like some solid well thought out cooking set ups. I do love cooking over a fire whenever possible. Especially in the winter. Man, that Huel curry you mentioned sounds delicious. I'm going to try that out. I appreciate the comment and support! Cheers.
@HoboGardenerBen
@HoboGardenerBen 11 күн бұрын
@HeyJonMoore Ya dude, I highly recommend that huel curry as a base for easy meals on the go. A bit bland on it's own, but add whatever and it becomes a satisfying stew. I'm thinking Iwas wrong about the aeropress, it's good but fiddly. My previous pour-over wasn't great, but a good one that doesn't wick drops along the underside is the best way to make coffee for sure. I'll look for a nicr steel one like you have :)

Go to harbor freight and get yourself a tailgate ladder, for less than 100 bucks. I saw one of your previous vids regarding not having 4wd, why don't you research a limited slip differential? It's cheaper than a new truck and 4wd really can tales a toll on your gas mileage. Good luck, safe travels!

Helpful videos dude, thanks. I’m thinking about making the truck camper plunge. OVRLND is at the top of my list, and I came across your channel. I’m curious, why not bounce back and forth? Spend x months east around family and friends and then head back west. Seems like one of the main benefits of the rig and lifestyle to me (I’m also east coaster, aging parents, etc).

Bruh, that homemade nylon string jig is gonna be a tough sell to the bluegill, crappie, or bass our hobo is after. A serious hobo would wake up face down in the forest after passing out / sleeping it off and then start pulling back those fallen North Carolina leaves to get to bare soil and grab a couple of earthworms as they try to escape and then put them on that hook. Now, that'll catch him something he can eat.

Thank you for this. Loving your videos. The message of fiscal responsibility, making due with what you have, and focusing on what it's really all about (being outside, spending time with friends and family) is so important. That message gets lost a lot in all the overlanding and van life influencers with the amazing six figure rigs. I definitely go down those rabbit holes of thinking I need a better, bigger, more comfortable rig (currently have a Go Fast Camper setup similar to yours and also in the PNW!). You're a great reminder that I don't need all that stuff to do what I want to do and I can use the money for the things that are actually important. Anyway, love the videos, so down to earth and relatable. Keep up the good work. I think you have the makings of the next Foresty Forest :).
