Working on this project as a civil engineering grad at the moment. To answer one of the questions the pits can be topped up from the nearby Copperfield river which is how they were filled initially.

Brilliant video . I found this after visiting pule hill today and admiring the tunnel shafts and engine houses there. One thing that I was surprised didn't get mentioned was how the depth of the tunnel was calculated, especially for tunnels on an incline such as the Queensbury tunnel where I live. A real shame this wasn't covered.

I would be more impressed if we didn't have to import all of our TBMs from Germany and actually tried to build some of them here.It has been estimated that we have had to purchase in the region of £200,000,000 of tunnelling equipment from Europe in the past 30 years.What the hell is wrong with our civil engineers.

Congratulations Francisco for the very interesting and well delivered presentation. A quick question from my side, are the Ventilation shafts also emergency exits or all the evacuation of the tunnel is designed to be via the stations?

What would you consider the top cost for 20 large hardrock TBM to drive Sydney/Canberra that Australia may be able to pay in Yuan.
@edwardbarnett65713 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing your experience Lok and I as have firsthand experience where after much surface drilling we hit a huge fault 50m from pit bottom in a coal mine I understand how ineffective surface drilling is. Without service roads, fences, bridges or buying land I believe that it would be just as cheap to drive a single tunnel Sydney/Melbourne with initially Parramatta/Canberra using a proven 600km/h Japanese Maglev. If the ten launch shafts are approximately 20 km apart it may be faster to ascertain the exact geology by using a special directional drill that can go ten km using 10m rods and perhaps a remote hydraulic cylinder to push the cutting head as they can do 5km now ascelibrary.org/doi/abs/10.1061/9780784482490.075

@BritishTunnelling4 жыл бұрын
@John King perhaps you can try the library at the Institution of Civil Engineer as a starting point. They maintain a substantial engineering archive, but can also point you in the direction of other archives who may have further relevant information.

Presumably because they used the wires down the shaft to enable them to maintain the correct bearing / alignment of the tunnel - shafts off set would mean that the setting out of the tunnel would be too difficult
