I've been looking at exactly the same pickup combination as you've chosen here, so this demo is hugely helpful. Just checking in on something another commenter asked: was there a reason why you decided on installing the mini-humbucker with the pole-pieces away from the neck?
@kj0539106 ай бұрын
I was looking for more clarity. My honest recommendation and the neck pickup that’s been in there for years now is the Dimarzio DP240 mini-hum. Easily matches better sonically with a Tele bridge and it works best with 250k pots unlike the Klein.

No idea, it’s been ages since I’ve had either of these pickups. My current setup which I’ve had for a few years now is a Klein Nocaster in the bridge and a Dimarzio DP240 mini-humbucker in the neck. Hands down the best combination I’ve ever had. The Dimarzio was made to work best with 250k pots and both pickups sound perfect with a .022 cap. The balance of volume and drive between these two pickups are absolutely perfect.

It’s a thick C shape, very comfortable, but I like large necks and have big hands. If you’re not sure if you’re going to like the shape, I would always recommend trying one out first. It’s definitely. It the biggest neck I’ve tried, but it’s not thin and it’s bigger than a ‘59 neck.

How does the Fred Stuart pickup compare to the Klein Nocaster in the bridge position? They both seem fantastic but I'm curious how they both pair with the Dimarzio. I am always itching to put one of those Stuart LapWrap guys in the bridge of one of my guitars but every time I will chicken out like 'NO ITS TOO POWERFUL!!!'
@kj053910 Жыл бұрын
The Fred Stuart had almost the exact same output as the Klein Nocaster does. The Stuart has 43 gauge wire and the Klein uses 42 gauge which accounts for the difference in DC resistance, but the output is almost identical from what I recall. I wouldn’t say it’s too powerful at all. By comparison, the Klein still has less output than the Throbak MT-102b humbuckers in my Les Paul by quite a bit.
@mastertonmusic Жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for the reply, that's suprising to hear but makes sense. I have been waffling between those Stuarts and the Klein Nocaster/Broadcaster models for quite some time to pair with a DP240, but they all seem so good it's been hard to choose. Can't lose, I guess. This is very helpful.
@kj053910 Жыл бұрын
@@mastertonmusic If I had to choose again I would go for the Fred Stuart. There’s something slightly magical about them. I’m actually going back to traditional with this guitar. I still love the Dimarzio, but I have a Les Paul so I don’t need two guitars with neck humbuckers. I think I’m going to go for Klein ‘52’s for a bit more snap.
@mastertonmusic Жыл бұрын
@@kj053910 Yeah those Stuarts seem to make people very happy. That's all i seem to read about them. Again, great advice. Did you get the standard bridge that he makes that's pushing 10k or did you have yours custom wound? I think they finally put them up on the website in the last few years because people like them so much. I played on a set of the Klein epic series recently, I think it was one of the mid/late 50's models in a newer american telecaster, but I swear straight into an amp they sound just like James Burton. Just incredibly slinky and snappy and made me wish I could actually play proper Nashville style. Such reasonable prices on all those Kleins too, I don't know how they afford it!
@kj053910 Жыл бұрын
@@mastertonmusic I had the standard LapWrap and before that I had a Stuart Blackguard in a Danocaster. The Blackguard is my favorite bridge pickup of all time, pure magic. You can’t really go wrong with the Klein’s though and the prices are far more reasonable. It all depends on what you want to play. The ‘52’s and the Nocasters and Broadcasters are all A3 and are a bit warmer and less snappy than the mid/late 50’s which are probably A5 which is sharper, brighter, and more straight forward for lack of a better term. You genuinely can’t go wrong with either. There’s a guy over on The Gear Page forum who shares my love for the Klein Nocasters called Seegs. He has a lot of great info and has a few videos here on KZbin too.

I would just leave it and use the volume and tone to get where you want to go. Search changing pickups in a 335. You have to pull the entire harness. It’s the worst.

Did you ever try the DP241 bridge minibucker? It is supposed to be a bit darker than the neck version (DP240)...DP240 seems much brighter than normal mini hubuckers to my ears.
@kj0539102 жыл бұрын
I did not, nowhere to put it. The neck is truly fantastic in a Tele. I went through so many pickups in that neck spot before this one and it’s still in there a few years later, not going anywhere. I don’t find it to be any brighter than the Seymour Duncan SM-1b that’s in the Hot Rod Tele. I would buy with confidence. I snubbed my nose at Dimarzio before I tried the DP240, but they really are great.
@Little38882 жыл бұрын
@@kj053910 Sorry what I meant was did you try the DP241 in the neck position. It is less bright and I've heard others say it's better than the DP240 for the tele neck position if you want more of a classic mini humbucker sound. On Dimarzio's page they say the DP241 is good for the neck position too despite being labelled a "bridge" pickup. I was originally going to try a Lollar mini humbucker but am now edging towards a Dimarzio. Just worried that the DP240 will be a bit too bright.
@kj0539102 жыл бұрын
@@Little3888 Gotcha. I did not, didn’t know that was even a recommendation. I would absolutely go with the DP240, it’s absolutely perfect, not too bright at all. In all honestly, I did the Seymour Duncan wiring trick where you add a .047uf or .022uf cap (don’t remember which) between the hot lead and the lug to give the pickup a hair more clarity. Sounds like you wouldn’t use that, but realistically there is really no humbucker on earth that would be too bright in the neck position when matched with a Tele bridge pickup which already bright. Another thing you have to think about is the balance. The DP241 is going to be quite a bit hotter than the DP240 which means that it will also be quite a bit hotter than just about any Tele bridge pickup. One of the many great things about the DP240 is that it’s perfectly balanced with the Klein Nocaster I have in the bridge in terms of both volume and how hard it drives the amp.
@Little38882 жыл бұрын
@@kj053910 Yes you are right, the output is what makes me edge towards the DP240. I have a '63 Fender CS bridge pickup, so it's not particularly hot. The DP240 is cermaic and not alnico though...does it still like a vintage style pickup to you? I'm looking for a more 60s Gibson tone for the tele neck pickup, and I think Gibson used Alnico for 60s humbucker pickups.
@kj0539102 жыл бұрын
@@Little3888 Yes, it absolutely sounds vintage, I’m not a fan of modern sounding pickups. FYI, the DP240 and DP241 were developed hand in hand with Gene Baker of B3 Guitars. Check out the B3 Phoenix, definitely vintage inspired.

Great Sound and nice demo !.. I may stand corrected but I think its 8.6K for the neck(on Website). Wish to have heard a bit more of the "Middle Position" as JP used this more than either the Neck or the Bridge.. Much of his solos and riffs were in the the middle. The correct "Chirp Sound" in the middle position is the key in how to balance the bridge and neck pickups height wise, if the post JP sound is the tone one is chasing.. I am hanging for a demo from someone with a Marshall Amp or a Plexi Pedal with this Set of Pickups... Nice demo Nevertheless. Thanks.

Luey Sixty-six I’ll be as brief as possible. I have tried EVERYTHING except for a true Firebird. Full size humbuckers are way too bass heavy to match the Tele bridge, P-90’s to bass heavy and dark. Even though this pickup sounds good in the video, it didn’t match well with the bridge in person and actually sounded kind of boring. Honest recommendation, and I know the company doesn’t get taken seriously most of the time, but the Dimarzio DP240 is easily the best pickup I’ve ever had in the neck of a Tele. Been in there 2 years now and still sounds like heaven. Added bonus, no wiring trickery necessary, works best with 250k pots.

Unfortunately I'm still a guitar away.... next axe is to be an Ibo shred stick...then I get to go all in on replacing my all time best guitar ....my black Tele. It might sound like I'm just talking crap.....so often you see in comments things like..."Right decision made! I'm buying this model (whatever is on the video at the time) immediately!" If you ever msg one of them months later, they're usually like, "Huh? What? A tele?! Yeah, nah..." But I'm already three guitars in to my five guitar plan.....all in the last year. And that includes a Gibson Les Paul. I work hard for minimum wage, and make a heap of sacrifices to make this possible. Plus I'm over halfway to getting the Ibo, so.....tele, im guessing, should come to fruition... beginning 2020... We'll see how I go.... But when I do, I'll be looking straight for that dimarzio mini you recommended. Cheers.

Luey Sixty-six I’ve been through probably 30-40 guitars. I eventually learned that the only guitars I like are Tele’s, LP’s, and LP Specials so that’s all I have left and will probably never buy another guitar again. Just sold off a Chamber ‘58 RI LP a few months ago and just have a Japanese LP. Have a cheap, but amazing LP Special knockoff too, and this parts Tele. I’ve been through a few thousand dollars in pickups between the Tele and LP’s I’ve owned, a huge rabbit hole. I’m satisfied with the Tele pickups and LP pickups finally, but the LP pickups are $$$$$$, Throbaks. On the other hand, it’s hard to make a P-90 sound bad so my LP Special wasn’t too difficult.
