I played Jeux d'Eau for my senior recital on a 9" grand. Nicolas' performance here seems a bit heavy and sluggish. The sonorities MUST sparkle and sing like an orchestra! Bring out the inner melodies more and don't cut the pedal off so much. Still, quite commendable for a workhorse of a piece!!! Thibaudet brought up EXCELLENT points during discovery and showed his true genius as an artist!!!

I play it like Richter's interpretation. It's quite different than this interpretation. Also insanely fast but fun af

Thibaudet bleibt erstaunlich freundlich.

Wonderful performance by a "student" (already an artist, really) and great masterclass by JYT. I would only suggest that perhaps Nicolas deleted it because he doesn't want it on KZbin, given the exposure and comments that come with any video, regardless of the quality. It has nothing to do with being selfish or not "allowing" us to learn. Artists are very worried about what goes out into the ether. Luckily, this video reflects him extremely well, but the misunderstanding from so many--inside and outside the musical world--is important to address. Granted, in playing for this masterclass, I am sure there was either tacit or written understanding that he would not own the rights. Still, I don't fault him for his attempt to control his public image. All artists do that, which is something that is becoming increasingly difficult in our society/culture.

Thank you for this comment. This masterclass was held in June 2011, so by now a decade ago. My God, how time flies. Anyway, I remember this day as if it were yesterday. I was asked on a couple of days notice to step in for a colleague of mine who was ill at the time. I had just learned the piece, a week or so, prior to this date. I kindly asked AVRO to take the video offline after a couple of years. Since I felt it doesn’t reflect my playing and what I consider a professional level. That could be considered selfish. Perhaps it is. But then it is my playing and artistic reputation, and not that of @dr Saurav Bose, that is on the line. Anyway glad that you and many others have enjoyed the video. Maestro Thibaudet is a great artist. I try my best and hopefully I will succeed at becoming one too. Best wishes, Nicolas van Poucke

@@nicolasvanpoucke.pianist I don't think it's a selfish act to want to show one's best side as a professional. However all artists have to develop and this is merely a document of an event 10 years ago. The reality is no one will look at this and think you're a rubbish player, and the ability to live with our 'mistakes' is a quality that I believe helps us grow as performers and human beings. There are a lot of amazing things here in your playing which hopefully you can appreciate, given the fullness of time.

@@nicolasvanpoucke.pianist I respect anyone who can play this. I also know that some artists like Zimerman dislike KZbin for having his performances because it's like "people don't have to buy albums anymore". That's something because the performer needs money so I understand.

Dear @@nicolasvanpoucke.pianist, please rest assured, your reputation is absolutely safe! Everyone goes through the learning process, and nobody watches masterclasses to be judgemental on students, what we are interested in are the insights from the teacher, and I'm who's struggling with this piece (I have small hands which really makes it near to impossible to play) had more than a few insights into how to approach this piece, thanks to you and the Thibaudet! Enormous thanks to you both, it's really a gem!
