Are you still using saxon for math and what are your thoughts on that program?

‼️Help‼️ ok so I have a 9 year old who is between 3rd and 4th grade math.. we will be trying out *Nicole the math lady. I am having trouble placing him. We looked at the placement test for level three and it seemed like those were all first grade level questions like shapes and numbers but then when I looked at the placement for 5/4 we definitely didn’t know some of it like introduction to division. We haven’t quite done yet. What would you say? We start with level three or should we jump right into 5/4?
@JessicaMessica246 ай бұрын
The difference won't be so obvious until the kids are much older. Little kids are great at going up to each other and asking to be friends and playing. In middle school is when the shift starts to happen. A well "socialized" kid will be able to approach anyone and make a friend or have a friendly conversation. A homeschooler who is getting their kids out there with others (whether in sports or co-ops) this will be no problem for the child. A public school kid (IMO) takes some time to warm up. A homeschooler who doesn't have extracurriculars will struggle. As the child reaches high school, the divide becomes greater. Especially if the public schooler or homeschooler has electronic devices (both of these groups will be anti-social). A homeschooler who has no device and has been in extracurriculars will have no problem. The other huge difference is that older homeschoolers (14 to 18 yo) will include and have respect for younger kids they do not know. They will include them in games and conversation. Public school kids will not do this if they are in high school. They may entertain it for a moment, but they will wander off trying to get away. A homeschooler who has not been in any extracurriculars on a regular basis will be socially awkward. Public schoolers may think homeschoolers are weird if they don't know the slang phrases. There are exceptions to the rule, but this is what I've witnessed. This conversation is much more relevant as the child gets older. I agree that socialization is secondary, and I also think that awkwardness in a homeschooler can be overcome as they get jobs and become adults. Kids IMO are more likely to be like their parents. If the parent seeks socialization, then so, too, will the child and vise versa. I think "socialized" homeschoolers are more mature because the parent is there to correct and have conversations about the social event to help guide their child to be a better friend or to handle a situation differently. The homeschool parent just has more opportunities to do this more often than a public school peer. This would be comparing boys to boys and girls to girls of the same age. An older homeschooler may appear weird to a public schooler because the older homeschooler still has a "play" drive. They are more likely to run around and play tag and play the younger kid games.
@JessicaMessica246 ай бұрын
I also want to add that adults who do NOT know your older child is a homeschooler will not think your kid is socially awkward. Only public school peers will. Adults have an opinion on this topic, but it's not like they can pick your kid out. Adults will think your homeschooler is a nice, well-mannered child. Only close family and friends will feel comfortable enough to tell you their opinions. Strangers will be shocked to discover your kid is so "normal"

I agree my kids have a cousin who is 10 and he is a little bit of a bully and a troublemaker. My kids are 8 and 6. I had this same conversation and said I think it's good that they have play time and are surrounded by him sometimes because it will toughen ours kids up and honestly they can learn what not to do as well

We already use Nicole the Math Lady for my middle and high school kids, and I am looking to have my 3rd grader start using her too this year - and if I don't need to purchase the TM that would save me a ton of money lol and if I don't need that, I just need her videos and the 2 consumable books, correct?

I didn't regret it at all, but it may be different for some. The 3rd math sheets were much easier to glance over and grade quickly by completing the problems as I went.

You said that you taught Saxon one in public school. Do you truly believe as a former teacher and now a homeschool mom that this spiral approach is the way to teach math well?? I ask because my daughter is about to start kindergarten and I'm losing sleep deciding between mastery and spiral. Top contenders are Saxon and rod and staff, but I'm also looking at horizons, cle, Singapore.
@MyCathedralGarden Жыл бұрын
Hey hey! I truly think the answer to your question is BOTH! Saxon DOES incorporate both mastery and spiral. They want you to master the facts for sure, the student has flash cards they learn from and a speed set with every lesson I believe. If I were in your spot, I would be looking into "Math With Confidence." I haven't personally used it, but I HAVE looked into it quite extensively for my sister-in-law, and oh my goodness it looks AMAZING! It is both spiral and mastery without being TOO much. Just be sure with kindergarten-2nd grades you are also incorporating a calendar time if they don't and you will be set. I have a video on how we did calendar if you want to see how we did that flow. We used horizons as well and found it was a good base. I think any way you go you will have a good year, those are all solid curriculums!
@laurenrasmussen7997 Жыл бұрын
Would you stick with math with confidence after kinder or go to saxon? I was thinking Saxon 1 for kinder? I also plan to use all about reading because it looks kind of fun. I want to provide a good foundation but at the same time not kill her love of learning before she even starts!
@MyCathedralGarden Жыл бұрын
Oh I totally get it! I would stick with Math with Confidence if we liked it well enough. I looked at all the ages and was beyond impressed! You will LOVE All About Reading! It was so good, thorough, and fun. The lessons do tend to get lengthy towards the end so don't hesitate to split the lessons up if you need to!

I can say one thing after two years of homeschooling. I will never label our style or school. We do what works for us period. Please nobody ever feel you need to figure out or find “your homeschool style” all you need to figure out is what works for you and each of your children for each subject and each stage. Sometimes that takes trial and error and sometimes it make not work that year but will the next or vice versa. Stay strong mommas and don’t fret over a specific style!❤

What did you end up choosing for writing? We are currently using Essentials in Writing, but we were gifted Structure and Style, so I’ve decided to push that to 5th grade, and try their more introductory book All Things Fun and Fascinating in 4th. If we don’t love it we can always come back to EIW! EIW is more traditional (here’s how to write a paragraph, expository paper, etc). I love that EIWs video lessons are super short, writing work is bite sized and manageable and they offer scoring services if you don’t have time to grade papers. We just use the composition portion 2-3 days per week and skip the grammar (using another thing for that). It’s very hands off for teacher :)
@MyCathedralGarden2 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of EIW, but I think that's what I thought I was getting with IEW... I think you should go for it with IEW in 5th grade. I think my hang up with it IEW was the year I was in for homeschool (4th grade , 2nd grader that was a struggling reader/writer, bright kinder who was good at reading, plus me personally teaching every math lesson along with two involved reading lessons PLUS the writing). It was just too much and I didn't watch the videos with him, and should have, at least at the beginning. I was expecting him to be on his own with this and he wasn't ready to be as far making sure he was doing everything the video said in the right way (does that make sense?). I know IEW is great and I think if you have the bandwidth to take it on and get them really rolling in the beginning it can be wonderful!
