I agree with most of your thoughts on the WP books, except for Hangman (maybe because I read a physical copy). I know I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed it and plan to reread it once I've completed the fiction and nonfiction lists. I did not care for Restless Dolly Maunder, but I will take your advice and try another of Kate Grenville's books.

I DNF’d Hangman too. It was too absurd. Also, just wondering if you ‘read’ most of your books on audio?

I bailed on The Maiden halfway. It felt superficial as in silly. 😉

I hated The Wren! Slow, convoluted and too much time spent on the daughter’s sex life which was boring.

Crooked Plow was my favorite too! Disappointed it didn’t win…

I should add I finally read A Little Luck by Pineiro. 😊 Not quite as good as Elena Knows IMO with regard to pacing, but worth reading for sure.

Kairos is not calling me, so I think I’ll skip it. But I did really enjoy Visitation by Erpenbeck. The the lovely thing about prize lists is discovering new books and backlists!

I still love Crooked Plow.

Also, the pooch is a sweet zen touch of levity … I have a few recommendations among a gazillion …The Map & The Territory by Michel Houellebecq, Stoner by John Williams, The Known World by Edward P Jones if you haven’t read them already … I thoroughly loved the bee sting … many complained about the ending … but I felt it fit well … I’m eager to read a bunch of the books you mentioned … Prophet Song… The Birthday Party … The Gospel ….etc … more recommendations … Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders … The Beginning & The End by Naguib Mahfouz … there’s an anthology of one act plays called Telling Tales edited by Eric Lane that are intense …if you like poetry you may enjoy Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror by John Ashbery … have a great day ! 😊

Just found your channel and really happy since we read a lot of the same books. I read Elena Knows in February and it quickly became a favorite for 2024. Loved her writing and would like to read more of her works. Elena Ferrante is a favorite author. I read The Lost Daughter last year and have read the Neopolitan series and enjoyed all of them. Will definitely be adding some of the books you discussed to my TBR.

Lots of great books - I'm reordering and adding to my TBR. I did read The Birthday Party because you were so taken by it. It was really good - the way the story unfolded was such a treat. I had to keep adjusting what I thought of the main characters. I keep thinking about it too. A sign of a very good book!

I've been too busy with the Women's Prizes, but I just ordered White Nights as that's the one that calls to me the strongest. It has been really difficult to get hold of even the UK! The publisher and/or the original print run must have been microscopic, but now it's finally available.

Kadare is Albanian. Dictator calls was a fast read but it's mostly non-fiction.

I've been told (as of now) that the only way to purchase White Nights is to buy directly from MTO Press. I believe it's 24 USD/32CD with shipping included, but I'm going by memory.

I loved A Little Luck, My Work, & Mild Vertigo and would love to see any or all of those on the longlist! Eligibility for the 2024 International Booker deems books must be published in the UK between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024, so unfortunately The Private Lives of Trees, Rombo, Solenoid, and Greek Lessons are not eligible as they were eligible in year's past. It also doesn't look like The Future has a UK publisher (I think Biblioasis only has an office in Canada) so I'm not sure it'll be eligible either.

The only one from the Women’s Prize long list that spoke to me immediately and ordered is The Maiden. 😊

I loved Study for Obedience and the author’s writing style/choices! That book has stayed with me and thus made my top 10 for 2023

😂 @ struggled not to use southern accent- Demon Copperhead is probably my fav read of ‘23 & I read a sh**ton of bangers- I Also read Still Born , Chain Gang Allstars, Study For Obedience, Wandering Souls, Black Butterflies, The Bandit Queens & The Bee Sting this year. Read Prophet Song last week & I’m confident it’ll be one of my favorites of ‘24. PS: love this whole outside aesthetic/ambiance 📖🪱💚

Great list! New to the channel and found you through this video. I know that this isn’t one of the book awards that you said you follow, but it Chain-Gang All-Stars was actually nominated for the National Book Award (States). Love seeing it on your list! It was my favorite of the year. I’ve been wanting to check out Study For Obedience and Black Butterflies. Both sound amazing. The Bee Sting is everywhere right now! 😅 I suppose I’ll have to read it after all of these rave reviews. I just got Wandering Soul from my library and am really looking forward to it. I’m skeptical about Prophet Song due to its formatting. I don’t love that style of writing where things just run on and on. Maybe I’ll try it as an audiobook. Adding Still Born to the TBR. I also have never want to have children, so I’ll be curious about the emotional impact. The Bandit Queens 🙌 I have this on my bookshelf. Love the concept for it.
