I have heard in some places that you should save for KDP paperback as a draft and not publish it until after your Ingram version goes live. But you said that you can publish the KDP version before Ingram goes live. Is this still correct? Thank you.

So unfortunately for me I started publishing my books years ago when KDP was still Createspace. I have published 3 books with the free isbn they offered and only recently found out about IngramSpark because something told me to do my research before haphazardly checking the expanded distribution box with Amazon. So, now I have a problem, and I've found a solution, but it's a pain in the butt. You can still publish your books with your own isbn so as to publish separately on an alternate sight like Ingram Spark, but you have to publish the book again as a separate book and unpublish the first one. (This thankfully does not interfere with my paid copyrights of the books as those copyright the works not the versions of the books.) Hope this helps. Wish I had known sooner. And thank you Jason, cause you've saved me a lot of future grief.

Great video. Question: We were advised by Ingram to should get a second ISBN for the same title since the ISBN was already in use for that title through KDP ... but our concern is that this will then generate a duplicate entry on Amazon that might confuse customers. If we had previously selected Expanded Distribution, may we turn it off and move forward using the same ISBN on Ingram Spark for a book that has already been published?

This is a great video! I set up my book with KDP and it was published on Amazon. Later I went to Ingram Spark to set up my title and their system said that my ISBN code was in use. True. It was being used by ME, on Amazon. IngramSpark is making everything more difficult. Their system is not friendly at all.

I saw another author indicate that Amazon will buy the preorders from IS and then when it goes live on Amazon, they will return them and cost the author a lot of money. Also, how long of a preorder period do you recommend before publishing live on KDP?

This was very helpful! Unfortunately I did it the other way round and uploaded to IngramSpark before KDP. Should I get a free ISBN for the KDP version - that would mean the same book would end up having two different ISBNs. Someone in my facebook group told me this: "Make sure to upload info on both platforms , past the isbn page and save. Then go ahead publish kdp and when ready publish ingram. If you publish kdp and then go to upload info on ingram you will get an error 'isbn already used'" Is it true? I assumed IS would not require a draft save of a book before publishing on KDP but this sounds like you need to have the details setup up on both first even if you publish via KDP first.

This was a really good video, I subscribed. I have a question, can books uploaded through IngramSpark make it to stores like Walmart or Target?
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
Yes, IngramSpark does distribute to Walmart and Target. Target has some odd requirements for indie distribution, though, and a lot of authors find their requirements unpalatable. Because of that, IngramSpark allows you to opt out of distributing specifically to Target. That's what I decided to do, so my books are distributed through IS to Walmart but not to Target.
@rocksreviewsreactions3373 ай бұрын
@@jasondoroughauthor Ah, thank you very much! I don't have any Targets close to me, so I will just publish to only Walmart as well, lol. I know it's not a 100% guarantee, but it would be cool to see my book in a physical store. Just another thing, do you assign your book to the ISBN fist and then publish it to KDP and Ingram? I assume you do, but just really isn't sure.
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
@@rocksreviewsreactions337 Yes, I always set up the ISBN at Bowker and then assign it to my book at KDP and then to the book at IngramSpark. Setting it up at Bowker just involves filling out a form in my account there and then waiting while they catalog the info I've given them for that particular ISBN and the book I'm assigning it to.

This is very detailed and I love it. I have a question. What if I setup on kdp already with their free isbn. Can I buy my own and change it on kdp and go ahead and publish on ingramspark?
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
I haven't tried that myself, but my best guess is that you'd need to set up a new listing for the book on KDP using your own ISBN. Amazon might be able to combine the previous listing with the KDP ISBN into your new listing with your own number, but I'm not positive whether that would work. It might result in a duplication of your book listing on Amazon. In that case, you'd probably just have to unpublish the original version that used the KDP number and then set up the new version using your own ISBN. Good luck!

What about on Ibooks?
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
iBooks only handles ebooks, so that's a different situation than the one covered here. You could have IngramSpark distribute your ebooks there, but I personally use Draft2Digital for distributing my ebooks to non-Amazon stores. And it's worth noting that you can't put your ebooks in iBooks if the book is also going into Kindle Unlimited, because KU requires that any ebooks in that program are exclusive to Amazon.

The problem with ARCs is that they cannot post their review on Amazon if they don’t have a $50 transaction in the 12 months - how can you solve this problem? Thanks - new subscriber here
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
There's not really a way around that Amazon limitation that I'm aware of. All the ARC readers I've worked with myself have been able to post reviews on Amazon because they've already shopped there recently. If I had an issue come up where an ARC reader couldn't post to Amazon, I'd just ask that they post to Goodreads and anywhere else they'd like to and are able to post.

Thanks Jason for your your detailed guide. I am an author in the UK and I am just about publishing my new book. I opted to do my Ebook, paperback and hardcover through KDP and my paper back and hardcover through Ingramspark. However, I enabled expanded distribution for Ingramspark and now KDP have rejected the ISBN for the print books saying it already exists and I believe this is due to the Ingramspark version. However, when uploading on Ingramspark, I saw no option for disabling Amazon on the expanded distribution list. Please can you advise me on what to do as my launch soon. Thanks very much.
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
Hello, and I'm sorry it took a couple of weeks to get back to you! Unfortunately, there's not a way to disable distribution to Amazon when you distribute through IngramSpark. IS's distribution generally sends the book information to all the stores in their distribution network, including Amazon (there are some exceptions, such as that you can specifically opt out of Target distribution through IngramSpark). That's why it's important to set up the ISBNs on KDP first. When you do that, the ISBNs are logged at Amazon with the KDP version. Then, when IngramSpark tries to distribute there, the numbers are already taken at Amazon, so the KDP versions remain intact there.

Hi Jason, Thanks for your videos, have learnt a lot - especially the KDP+IngramSpark video. I have a question for you... Right now I have a book (print only) on pre-order through IS distribution channels, which is therefore also available for pre-order on Amazon. My KDP version of the book (same ISBN) is all set and saved as Draft, and I'm ready to hit the "Publish" button on KDP on the official launch day. But here's the question: Will the switch be immediate on Amazon? If not, how long does it take for Amazon to remove the IS listing and show the KDP version? & what happens to any orders placed on the launch day? Thanks for your advice!
@jasondoroughauthor3 ай бұрын
Hello, and I'm sorry it took me a while to reply to this. I was at Dragon Con and then sick afterwards and am finally getting caught up now! To answer your question, the timing can vary on the switchover. Sometimes it's very quick, but sometimes it can take a couple of days for things to change over completely. In my own experience, I usually set the book live on KDP at night, go to bed, and find that it's completed by the time I get up the next morning. But it definitely can vary.

If you are using the free ISBN from KDP, you won't be able to use that same number at Ingram, unfortunately. But, if you're using your own ISBN and have entered it at KDP and have not opted into expanded distribution, then you should be all good to set the book up at IngramSpark now with that same ISBN (which you own).
