Wonderful. What fun it was to hear your telling of Borrid's adventure. Sounds to me like this game hits a happier place in the solo heart than the last one did. I truly think running one character versus 4 is more appealing. I have received my full set of 2d6 dungeon books for a few months now and haven't broken them in right. Thinking I might revisit that (and 4ad) a bit more than I have been. I love trying new stuff, but the simplicity of the familiar is appealing too. Thanks again for sharing your game time with the rest of us. Can't wait to see more as time passes by. :)

Thanks Sam! I saw you posted another video and I hope to watch it today. This adventure definitely fit me more comfortably than the other. One of the reasons I solo is to learn adventures that I might run with others, and I do think the Unquiet Night could be fun for a group with some important modifications. I've moved from "I will never use a dream sequence" to "how would *I* use a dream sequence?" so that's good I think :) I have the pdfs of most of 2D6 but I haven't played it yet either. I think you're right about one character vs. 4. I know for me with multiple characters I start to treat it as a simulation but with one or two characters it easier to immerse myself in the story.

Great video, as always! I think I know what the Hit Protection is or what you can think of it as. Some math first! When you roll, you subtract your Armor, which you then take that result and subtract from your Hit Protection. But, you can also think of it this way: Add your Hit Protection and your Armor, then subtract your roll. I would suggest the Hit Protection is similar to how well padded your Armor is. Or you can just think of it however you wish, of course, haha! (BTW, how's Brunhilda diVignaMarcia?)

@liamperrin (I too want to get back into 4AD. I've actually been rewatching your playthroughs from last year. I think when I do start up again, I'll start with new characters. Been so long since I played. Maybe get some new books. Only have 4AD, Twisted Minions, and Four Against the Abyss. Suggestions are always welcome!) I was looking at the DnD PHB after reading Druidic's comment. Seems that 10 sp is comparable to a comfortable room in DnD. Found a fort and now Orthax has to find something to bind Lirann's hands to make it look like she's his prisoner. Not sure what's in the fort. I haven't been peeking ahead too much.

@@ericvancura9764 Honestly one of the main reasons I started making videos was so I could put down an adventure and pick it back up again later and all I'd have to do is rewatch the videos :D I need to print some standees of Orthax and Lirann - maybe Borrid will bump into them in the tavern. The 4AD book that is pulling me right now is the Treacheries of the Troublesome Towns.

It was great to hear about Borrid’s adventure and there are even a couple churches that he may have walked from a few hexes away, but I wont give any spoilers! Using the trap to fight the rats was really smart and it made me think that I need to find more creative solutions to combats in my own solo play! There’s a chance that the cairn ruleset is using the silver standard for room rates and similar stuff which would make your starting gold last quite a while more haha. Still you got some good loot off of the bounty so it’ll probably be easier to stick with gold going forward. Definitely make some friends or get some hirelings before you venture too far outside of Idarthorpe!! The reason I suggest Cairn or Knave in the book is not only because those games can use OSR stat blocks super easily and are modular; but also it is fairly simple to play as 3-4 characters and the roads always feel less lonely with friends! Can’t wait to see what Borrid gets up to next!!!

I picked it for this youtube series mainly because it's free and I wanted it to be as easy as possible for folks to play along. Along those lines, thank you again for making your work so accessible. @@druidichabit9181 I don't know as much about what all is out there as I'd like to, but it looks to me like you've got something really unique here that soloists don't know they want yet. Most of the solo stuff I see is either - how to generate your own worlds and adventures or choose your own adventures with numbered paragraphs and whatnot. I don't know of anything else like what you're doing. Maybe the campaign books for d100? I haven't looked at those. 4AD has adventure books but nothing that really attempts to present a populated world to explore.

I could see this being used to deliver a prophetic message or something from one of the ghosts. Not sure what other good may have come from this though, but I'm only a solo GM. Only been doing it for about 2 years now. Question: Couldn't you have used the Dawn Blade as a reflective surface? That may have been the purpose for having the blade there. Just a thought. I have gotten into the Veiled Peaks. Rolled a d12 and counted down that many on the Table of Contents. That's where I started. Two strangers with the same last name, but not related. Since August, I've been running a DnD Fight Club with 26 characters. Up to fight 90 now. It's a good way to learn the rules, even if some I nudge. Keep up the good work, Sir Liam! (And watch out for any snails from Wrenwood!)

I think yeah the dawn blade could be reflective enough to work. I'm imagining a Monty Python type moment where the hero asks for the dreamganger to look at the dagger blade while the hero tries to get it at just the right angle :D I LOVE the idea of the fight club to learn rules for a new system. Which hex did you land in in the Veiled Peaks and what's your character's name / background. It would be fun to bump into other people's characters :D

@liamperrin Started in Hex 3519. Orthax (gambler) and Lirann (pickpocket) made their way to town already. Only faced two killer bees along the way. (Have to get used to the bestiary.) They have to track down a Consortium for the Wardens (used a generator for the faction names.) I did print out part of the hex grid map. Been drawing the map best I can as it is revealed. On the front of the zine (printed that out too), I decided to put the terrain type in each hex as I travel through it. Thought it would be easier to figure travel times. For travel modifiers (which I wrote near the biomes on the back of the zine), I borrowed from Basic Fantasy. (1/3 for mountains, 2/3 for forests and hills, normal for grasslands, and 4/3 for roads.) Figure they can travel 24 miles in a day, since they can move 40' per turn, per the Cairn rules. They spent the night at the tavern (1 sp, not sure if that's too much or too little. Feel free to let me know either way.) That's as far as I've gotten. Plus, I've been typing it up as I go and keeping some stats and rolls in the document, instead of constantly erasing. Looking forward to your video, Liam!

@@ericvancura9764 Sounds like a fun time so far :) Funny you should mention it - I talk about the inn & tavern costs in the upcoming video... the Cairn 2E web site includes and expands on things in Cairn 1E and the prices there are crazy high in my opinion for room and board - 10gp per day for a shared room and 35gp per day for a private room (but it's big enough to house 4 people). Maybe KZbin will let me link it here: cairnrpg.com/second-edition/players-guide/marketplace/

@@liamperrin 10 gp does seem like a lot for a room, seeing as how a deck of cards costs the same. Looking at the DnD PHB now and I see an inn stay ranges from 7 cp for sqalid conditions up to 4 gp for aristocratic conditions. So I guess my 1 sp (which is poor conditions in DnD) isn't so bad.

Loving it as always, Liam. !! Good times. I find this adventure and rpg play along an interesting lesson for solo gm's. KZbin presenters sometimes edit out the struggles of the solo gm or situations they don't like. So I'm learning from your candid and conversational approach. Although my wife likes your voice; Therefore, I do have a little jealousy here. 😊 Basically, I have modified my approach.. I'm simply not going to care as much. I need to laugh and plow right through. Hahaha... I don't entirely blame Loke games, although they do own some of the writing issues. I blame some on myself because I don't know Shadowdark, so thats an added tier of difficulty, on top of running 4 characters with a full set of rpg rules in a new system not written for that ruleset. But hey, wasn't that part of the charm when we signed that contract for all that mazzerrati money we are going to get? 😅 Anyway, I too have tried a few times to play this quest and have backed away, mainly because it's like I'm doing this knowing in the end it lacked anything that really mattered to my characters and me as a solo GM. I think I would bring myself up on charges for torturing the innocent players around me had this been an actual group game and not solo. I apologize for being slow to post an update. Physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually, this has been the toughest 4 weeks of my life. That said, games have always been that haven I can turn to when I'm down. Besides, a promise is a promise (a wise man basically told me that once) 😊. I've got some creativity and fantasy left in these old bones, and if I can get over my stage fright and doldrums, you'll be seeing it all soon. I promise. 😊 Oh, one more thing. TOTAL agreement about 'dream sequences'. My other really big pet peeve is time travel. Getting through a whole storyline just to have someone go back in time, change one thing, and everything is better. /gag Take care, everyone, and as i said, my amateur, unprofessional, but deeply therapeutic submission will be up in a few days, I hope. Keep playing games, even if you're the only one that shows up.

Thanks Sam - I was feeling like this video in particular was a bit of a train wreck so I'm very happy to hear that it's helpful. I'm very sorry these past few weeks have been so tough - and I know that's on top of an already bad year. I am praying that things turn around. You know how when you hold a ball underwater in a pool and let it go, it shoots high up into the air... Maybe you're being pressed down so hard so that you can fly all the higher sometime soon. You have created a very cool party of characters. I can't wait to hear how they do - even if it's just a battle report so-to-speak rather than a recorded playthrough. I think recounting what happened is easier than playing on camera - maybe because you can focus just on one thing at a time. I have been surprised how hard it is to play while being observed if that makes sense. Time travel... yeah. And the multiverse. Anything that nullifies the stakes makes the whole story impotent. The only time travel movie I like is Primer. If you haven't seen that, I highly recommend it. I had to watch it a few times to begin to make sense of it, but now I'm convinced it's the only story I know that's explored time travel well. I don't hate the way J.K. Rowling used it in that one Harry Potter movie either I suppose. Thank you to your wife for the compliment about my voice :) I do a passing Sean Connery impersonation that maybe we'll see on an NPC sometime. :D

Your rework of the Dawn Blade reminds me of a bug from one of the Infamous games where a boss would split up and the clones wouldn't render real-time lighting effects, so you could check the boss while it was taunting by firing off lightning bolts around the area until you saw the light and color of the bolt reflect on a model. The looping of the meta-game while the characters wake up empty-handed but leveled up is reminiscent of the roguelite genre of game, a feature I haven't experienced in a RPG campaign yet but am eager to try!

For Cairn+Hexplorers I was thinking just one character. If things get rough maybe find a sidekick or some hirelings, but I'm going to try just starting with one. For Shadodark+Calendar I'm thinking four characters - one of each class in the quickstart which I think is fighter, priest, thief and wizard. Thanks for asking Sam - you gave me the idea that maybe it's better to set the stage and do a little setup first before jumping right into the adventure. (That buys me some time to read all these rules too :D) Oh, and I'm starting everybody at level 1. The first adventure in the calendar is aimed at level 5-7 I think. So I'm going to see what I can do to scale things down and/or give the party an advantage. The calendar has some suggestions, but scaling from 5-7 down to 1 could be tricky heh.

She releases one fastener. And another. And soon Ivy's armor is collapsed in a heap at her feet. She unfurls magnificent white wings, stretches them, tests them with a flap that tumbles Disco headlong into Vinny. Vinny sets Disco down gently and grins until a sudden thought dawns. He checks his pockets as Disco scampers away. At the crest of the hill, Ivy launches herself into the sky. She circles her cheering friends and then flies for the horizon silhouetted against the rising sun. Tank the Wise sighs and says, "Well, that took long enough."

Oh, I almost forgot to guess at tomorrow's page. I guess it's a store, where you can spend all that amber you have earned for no reason over the last week or so. 😂

Maybe you could choose a retirement story based on how much amber you'd saved. Fishing rod 10 amber, RV 100 amber, yacht & island 1000 amber. :D

I didn't want it to end, but all things do, I guess. Thank you so much. Please let us know what, if anything, you plan to do next on the channel. Peace, love, and joy to you and all.

Wow, and that's it. Thank you so much! I can't believe it's been 364 days playing along with Ivy and Friends. This has been an enjoyable year. I hope to tag along with what 2025 brings.

I've really enjoyed hearing your adventures with Tuckerman too :) One more quest calendar video tomorrow, and then I have a couple of ideas for 2025 that I'd love to have folks play along with (not daily heh - that was tough).

1) Wish Liam and kin a very Merry Christmas. (Roll d20 + CHA) Reminder: Santas Watching I rolled a 14. Two more and we can get the best result. Drink egg nog = d4. <insert snicker>. And I got a 1. / sigh Ok, maybe my elf companion, Thomas can help. If we can get a misprinted joker, we have a chance. Nope, we got an ace. Well, I'll settle for the middle result and just wish you the very best Christmas possible. PS - I forgot I had a boon die <headsmack>

Ha! Never touched me! Never had to figure out if the damage was d4 or d6. I had to remove the last few pages from the calendar as the plate lip made it hard to remove the page.
