It is more or less correct that Jugend means youth in German; but if you consider it in the context of the society of which Elly is a part of; i.e., the racism against Lambs and more explicitly that they, the Lambs, are to be controlled / managed, and that Elly is given the go ahead if not explicit order to kill any Lambs that she comes in contact with, it is more apt to infer that the creators were in no uncertain terms referencing the Hitlerjugend, or Hitler Youth, when they chose to call the organization that Elly trained under Jugend. Also, Geburah was originally called Gebler in the Honeywood translation. But neither is the correct term the original creators’ were likely referencing / going for. So even though the fan translation tried to correct the error, it still missed the mark. The correct transliteration of the Hebrew term should’ve been Gevurah; which in Jewish mysticism refers to the forceful left hand or the harsh protocol of divine judgement. Whereas the right hand, Chesed, is offered in mercy / extended in grace, the left hand hands down judgement / mitigates the mercy offered by the right. Gevurah is sometimes referred to as Din, power, but both Gevurah and Din occupy the same place in the divine cosmogony. As Gebler / Gevurah’s prime directive is to control (judge) and suppress (maintain a position of power over) the Lambs, in context of the game, this reading checks out. Also, I love your videos, but the audio mixing makes it really hard to hear you any time music starts to play. In the previous video it was quickly corrected, but so far in this video it continues to make it hard to decipher what you are saying or what you are reading when the chat is saying something to you. I will continue to try to watch as I really like how interested you are in delving not just into the plot, but into the character motivations as well which most LPs of this game don’t go into nearly enough. All the same, maybe the audio mixing improves the longer you play this game so I will continue to try to give the LP a chance as I really want to continue seeing your reaction to the story. I can only imagine your reaction when the story really gets going :-)

That is awesome to hear! It makes me want to power through the rest of this VOD even more as knowing the audio gets better will make the experience of watching it a LOT easier. I cannot wait to experience your reaction to revelations that come later on in the game. It truly was ahead of its time and I am hoping after playing through Xenogears you’ll eventually have the energy / desire to power through Xenosaga. It is a beast and admittedly clunky at parts, but Saga is truly a vision when it comes to telling a story of truly epic proportions. What Gears does with religion / faith (which Saga does touch somewhat on too), Saga does even better with morals / ethics, and especially the impact of a collective trauma on different types of people and the various ways in which people deal with said trauma. I am just rediscovering Xenogears these past few months as I have played Saga a lot more than Gears since they both came out. My last full playthrough of Gears, until recently, was in 2003; but being a lot older and from all the studying up I did on the concepts thrown around in Saga I’ve come to really appreciate the story Gears has to tell. It is one of those instances where you enjoy something when you’re young, but don’t really get to fully appreciate it until you’re a lot older and have gained more of the understanding / wisdom that comes later on in life. I am currently replaying through Gears, with then replay through the entirety of Saga until I finally tackle the Blade games for the first time hopefully early next year. I bought Xenoblade for the Wii way back when it was first released in the 2010’s but never got around to playing it. I eventually purchased all three Blade games on Switch and hearing that the Xenoblade III DLC might reference the beginning of Gears is what sent me on the quest to replay the entire series from scratch and finally get into the Blade games. I cannot wait, after so many years, to see what they have to offer.

So I am seeing the first instance where, in a way, the Honeywood translation is actually a tad better. “To use power, or to be used by power. Is that not a matter of the heart?” It was a lot more concise and took up only one screen of dialogue versus the two screens in the fan translation. Citan saying mind instead of heart and the wordiness of the following dialogue box didn’t exist in the Honeywood translation which was more to the point and poignant; especially since “a matter of the ‘heart’” sounds a LOT more specific to Fei’s struggle than a matter of the ‘mind’. It may be closer to the original Japanese in the fan translation, but this time I have got to give the point to the Honeywood translation.

Sorry if this ends up resulting in more comments than necessary, but good for the algorithm so, yay for that? Anyway, in -Gears and the -Saga games, replace any mention of Lost Jerusalem with planet Earth. They are one in the same. It is never mentioned again in -Gears, but a huge portion of the backstory of -Saga is just how Lost Jerusalem ended up getting lost.

Finally, I am not sure if the Blade games cover this, but Monado is a reference to the Monad, a fundamental Gnostic concept, and is very similar to Kabbalistic concept of Eyn Sof or the indivisible “one”; the ultimate unseen / unknowable aspect of God’s “full” or put more correctly “unindividuated” presence. The game never makes mention of the actual term Monado or Monad, but there is an entity / object that serves as a sort of stand in for the Monad, which uses more Kabbalistic coded terms to describe itself. From what I have heard, Xenoblade II and Xenogears are, thematically at least, the same game. So you very well might get a lot more out of this playthrough having already played Xenoblade. I hope that I too will get a similar benefit when I eventually pick up Xenoblade II, as it would be interesting to experience another take on the Xenogears story, with different events and characters.

Forgot to mention in my previous comment, but you keep on making references to Canada when referring to Kislev. Is that by design or just you being funny, using real world stand ins to help remember the warring factions in Xenogears’s world? I only ask because a particular object, eventually referred to as the Conduit in the Blade games, was supposedly being researched / experimented on in Canada before all hell broke loose; at least according to the supplemental materials / backstory of the Saga games. Just wondering if some of that backstory carried over into the Blade games and that is why you keep mentioning Canada or if it’s just all a big coincidence, lol?
@frost1080
@frost1080 11 ай бұрын
Just a big joke for me, Kislev in the North being Canada and Av in the South being America @@tinyguy9398
@tinyguy9398
@tinyguy9398 11 ай бұрын
Ah. Well, Canada does technically play a ‘major’, if not tangential and blink if you miss it if you don’t read the supplemental materials, role in the greater Xenosaga plot, so if you are from Canada you get to claim to be a ‘major’ part of the Xeno universe. Yay? That said, this does however start the convention of most locations in Xenogears being named after month’s in the Jewish calendar; namely: Aveh (Av), Kislev, Nisan, Thames (Tammuz), Shevat, Zeboim and Elru (Elul). Also, most gears are given names that are either common German words or names from Norse mythology. Fei’s gear Weltall, for instance, is the German world for universe, and translates roughly to “all world” in English if you translate out the constituent parts each individually. There is a gear acquired MUCH later in the game whose name was totally butchered instead of meaning what it is supposed to mean in German, instead translates to ‘ten sieves’ or ‘ten strainers’ because they transposed two letters in the gear’s name. So I affectionately call out, “summon my giant tea strainer” when I call the gear in battle, lol. I imagine that is one of the things this fan translation fixed. But I do like thinking of Kislev and Aveh being Canada and the USA. If not for anything, than for the pun US av’ Eh…. cricket… a’hem, I will leave now.

‘Son of man’, outside the opening cutscene, is the first of many of the countless biblical references / terms thrown around through out the game. “Son of man” is used interchangeably in biblical apocrypha with “son of Adam” to refer to humankind; generally by beings who are markedly non human (angels, daemons, et cetera). You previously might have heard the term employed, if you read any of the books or watched the films, by C.S. Lewis by characters in his Chronicles of Narnia series originating from the titular Narnia to refer to characters originating from Earth, our world. The other biblical references used so far in the opening cutscene are conversely spoken by Jesus in the Book of Revelations 22:12: “I am Alpha and Omega. The Beginning and the End. The First and the Last.” and in Genesis 3:5, spoken by the serpent (or in Christian tradition, haSatan disguised as a serpent ) to convince Eve to partake of the Fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil: “For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.” So the opening cutscene / anime opens with an admonition spoken by Jesus in the final book of the Bible and ends with a temptation spoken by haSatan in the initial book of the Bible. Narratively speaking this is very apt as something both ancient and advanced has been “judged” and is coming to and end and something new has begun (a new Genesis as it were). Is the new Mother /new Eve, or the purple haired lady with big boobs as you referred to her, pure from mankind’s original stain or has she too been tempted by the Fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil to become as God. I have played all the Xeno games up through Also Sprach Zarathustra but have not touched the Blade games quite yet. In Xenosaga in particular, especially in the Episode I and Episode III databases, you learn that an encyclopedic knowledge of classical literature and biblical apocrypha is key to understanding the full meaning of the various references throw around throughout this series. At least in Gears and the Saga games, most references are not being made just to sound cool, but actually have some importance to the plot / theme of the game if you understand the reference being made. Also, the translation of this game is probably the wonkiest of all Xeno games and some glaring errors are made, even in the opening cutscene. For instance, “Omega 1, they are attacking; I cannot stop them” should have been translated as “Omega 1, it is attacking, I cannot stop it”. It sounds like they add talking to Omega 1 and Alpha 1 as if they are teams of people, but they are rather talking about two distinct objects / systems named Alpha 1 and Omega 1. The autopilot system is named Faust and is another reference to the fruit of “forbidden knowledge” in the opening cutscene; this time referring to a German legend of a doctor who sold his soul to a demon for “knowledge and power”. None of this is brought up again, so I am not spoiling anything per se. It is just some thematic foreshadowing that some form of knowledge might exist on this ship that is forbidden and we are to assume was worth destroying the ship over to prevent it falling into the wrong hands. Also, if you look at the art asset for the sign at Citan’s house you can see that his name was originally actually spelling Shitan which was likely a bad transliteration of / or maybe even purposely altered version of Satan, as haSatan is pronounced in Hebrew with a sh- sound in some dialects. So one might ask is the game foreshadowing here or not. Is he a Satan in a Christian sense or more of a Satan in Promethean sense (bringing knowledge / light) to the player. You are far enough along in the game now you might be already asking those types of questions yourself, so I figured I might show how the game was already foreshadowing them at the very beginning.

+Frost1080 It was my pleasure. I did not mind writing it at all and very happy you were able to find some enjoyment in that wall of text I posted above. I don’t mind continuing to post similar comments from time to time if you are amenable to them as I love sharing such details with others when given the opportunity. Also, I have just gotten to the part where you mention enjoying the track Knight of Fire (one of the many amazing boss themes in this game and the one that plays as you are heading down the mountain to the burning village). The audio is actually a heavily distorted clip from CNN coverage of the trial of Marlon Brando’s son Christian Brando, who was on trial for murder back in the early 90’s and that somehow ended on an audio sample disc that Yasunori Mitsuda used in mixing the soundtrack of this game. The exact words being sampled in this track are: “Total sentence is ten [years in state prison]”, though only the first part is used in the track. It is highly distorted and looped, but if you listen very carefully you can just make it out. You can read more about the quest to determine what the audio in the track was saying by looking up “total sentence is 10 years in state prison audio clip” on Google and reading the article on either Reddit or Gamefaqs. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of sleuthing this game has inspired over the years, but at the same time doesn’t as for a niche game from the late 90’s, this game has one amazingly dedicated and welcoming fan base. To which I say welcome and hope you enjoy the journey :-)

What? Fei has a cross equipped?!?! Call me crazy, but I’ve played this multiple times and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this in the vanilla game. Maybe whoever imaged the emulated ROM hacked it in? The description makes it sound like the item you need a lot of gold to buy, but that turns your magic user into a disc 1 nuke much later on in the game. Fei is wearing a cross in the anime cutscene, but it was never an equippable item in the base game.

Interesting. I will have to really pay attention to the dialogue now to see what has changed. I’m kind of glad they did not change the RPS guy shouting “Oh my Gobrino!” when he loses; as though it is tremendously nonsensical and quite silly, translations like that add so much to the charm of the game. One of the charms of this game is its, at times, Woolseyean translation choices, but there were other times where things were just outright mistranslated that totally confused what was going on or at times totally flipped the meaning of certain cutscenes on its head. It would appear the Perfect Works translation is probably changing more of the latter and less of the former. That, if true, is a very good thing.
