Is there an adapter that can be used to sharpen scissors?
@DavidB-MTO2 ай бұрын
Not for the system, and TSProf adapters to make that possible would cost twice as much as the Xarilk
@clintonmccool23302 ай бұрын
Fantastic review. Much appreciated. How would you compare this to the Xarilk Gen3 that you recently reviewed? The system you show (the version without the pedestal stand and included stones) is selling for about $234, while the Xarilk can be had for as low as $79 right now. Do you think this system is worth 3 times the price? For reference, I'm a complete rookie and don't own any crazy high quality knives. Mostly chef style knives under 60 HRC and angles between 8° and 20°. I'm doing basic home cooking. Just looking for a decent sharpening system and was going to get the Xarilk Gen3, but wondering if this unit would be worth the extra price or just overkill for what I need.
@DavidB-MTO2 ай бұрын
If your just doing a few kitchen knives here and there I would get the Gen 3. If your looking at keeping your entire knife collection sharp then the KosiM. The Gen 3 isn't suited for pocket knives but it can be done. The flexibility of the KosiM allows it to sharpen a lot more than the Gen3. They're in two different categories, but it's hard to ignore the price between them.

You need a microbevel on the apex around 2 degrees higher than the edge. So if your edge is 20 deg. use a ceramic honing rod on it at 22 deg. Amazon sells ceramic honing rods with plastic guides to help you get the angle you want. I just got one and it works great to get that next level of sharpness you (and I prior) didn't know we were missing. I guess you could try using your highest grit stone at 22 degrees (or sharpen at 18 and microbevel at 20 if you want). But you have to use a feather light touch. Good luck!

Do you think this unit would be capable of sharpening a chef knife with a recurved style blade? For reference, I'm specifically referring to a knife like the Dalstrong Gladiator Series 7-inch Barong. (I'd leave a link, but KZbin won't allow it.) Thanks for a great video!
@DavidB-MTO2 ай бұрын
At first I read this as convexed lol My poor brain is tired. I looked up your knife, I do believe this would work. The stones are only an inch wide and your recurve is gentle enough that the stone edges shouldn't have issues following the arc of the edge.

Good demo! It’s surprisingly similar to my Kadet Pro that cost 6x more. A wrap of kapton tape will firm up the grip of the clamps without the wiggle of rubber. What size are the clamp screws? A knurled or T-handle wrench should provide enough torque to adequately tighten the clamps. What is the diameter of the rod? Curious if other stone holders (like Hapstone) will fit to allow two-sided flat ended stones like Venev. Thanks!
@DavidB-MTO3 ай бұрын
Yeah it's very similar, I would say a copy of it. I will look into the kapton tape. I don't know any sizes, I don't have any calipers to check but I'm sure I can get info from Xarilk. Yes I think a T shaped wrench would work better. The clamps from my pioneer fit the Xarilk so it would be whatever size those are. I will say the rods on the Xarilk sharpeners are no where near as nice as others. No polish or anything, I think it hinders the smoothess somewhat.

It would be a great idea if they were using decent steel for these. Theyre using 2 and 3crmov and the most expensive knife they have is 8cr13mov. Which is fine. But the screw driver being 2cr isnt giid enough to turn a screw without breaking. 3 cr is basically stainless steel used for making pots. Or pot metal. It isnt fit for tools. All the tool should be made of 420hc or 440c. The knife should be made of d2 or 14c28n, same with the saws etc. And then yes. It would be expensive. But it woukd be usable
@DavidB-MTO6 ай бұрын
The Flex is made with 5Cr15Mov, both the blades and components. Similar to 440A. I agree it would be nice for a bump in steel quality. Maybe for the blades they'll give us upgrade options.

I don’t do alot of swapping now that I have things where I want them so the “better” swap mechanism doesn’t really matter to me. I do often take out my craft blade and use it individually. Wow, so much unrealized potential here! - Leatherman, why can't you offer us a truly custom mix of tools? You have the idea but not the execution... - That hobby/surgical blade holder is dynomite! - That scraper/chisel/wire stripper looks really useful, in ways I don't even yet know- that's the kind of multi-function we really want from a multitool blade!! - Nobody can beat the SAK awl/reamer blade- it's just a perfect, multi-function tool! Leatherman, side-eyes here... This awl/reamer is on steroids, and not necessarily in a good way... - Everyone else has figured out how to combine a bottle opener with a can opener (super useful for more than just those two functions) but these guys haven't... Yeah, this great idea just makes me want more from Leatherman... SMH

There's a lot of potential from the platform and it's by no means perfect. The more time I spend with it I find things I would change. I think Leatherman would kill it if they had an open platform like this, but then again that would cut into profits.
