This has been my EDC since April. I spent dozens if not literal hundreds of hours looking at knives, comparisons, etc, trying to find a design I really liked. This was one of the only knives I fell in love with, been rocking it daily since. There's times I wish I had a more slicey blade but I love that you can abuse it and it won't care. Benchmade heat treats their Magnacut to 60HRC, which is on the low end for Magnacut. The good side of that is that the lower hardness makes the steel tougher, less prone to chipping or snapping the tip, and a lower hardness also increases the corrosion resistance, making the Mini Adamas' blade almost completely rust-proof. Great knife that could have been even better with some improved blade geometry and a slightly higher heat treat. I'll be carrying mine for years, if not decades to come.
@DavidB-MTOКүн бұрын
I agree completely. I wish Benchmade would heat treat the Magnacut to a higher HRC to give us some truly amazing edge retention but in ways I like the trade off they have. As far as the Mini Adamas is absolutely amazing and I too could it being my only knife for a long time. Definitely in my top 10.

It's a very awesome knife and great for EDC. My only gripe is that sheath, I feel Benchmade cheaped out on it. I see on Etsy they have a kydex one for $55 that's nice and would make it a better carry.

This is my first fixed blade EDC knife as well. Strange enough, I like the factory sheathe! My brother-in-law even makes custom kydex. I like the sheath as its easier to reholster the knife as apposed to a slimmer kydex one. As long as the spine of the knife slides against the sheathe, it locks in every time.

Thanks for the tip I'll try that.

Here's a great example of why the small-market independent knife reviewers are worth views and subscriptions. There's a lot of shilling going on with the major reviewers these days. Would they include audio of the blade contacting the plastic sheath showing just how thin and insubstantial that sheath is and then actually comment on how cheap it feels? Nope. They're going to just go on about how it's light and reversible.

Did yours come with spacers? My issue is that if you only use a few of the tools then the whole thing becomes wobbly and unstable.
@DavidB-MTO25 күн бұрын
The Companion will come preloaded and it's best to use it that way or swap with the other tools in the kit. Doing so will keep the proper tension and you won't have that problem. Not for the system, and TSProf adapters to make that possible would cost twice as much as the Xarilk
@clintonmccool23304 ай бұрын
Fantastic review. Much appreciated. How would you compare this to the Xarilk Gen3 that you recently reviewed? The system you show (the version without the pedestal stand and included stones) is selling for about $234, while the Xarilk can be had for as low as $79 right now. Do you think this system is worth 3 times the price? For reference, I'm a complete rookie and don't own any crazy high quality knives. Mostly chef style knives under 60 HRC and angles between 8° and 20°. I'm doing basic home cooking. Just looking for a decent sharpening system and was going to get the Xarilk Gen3, but wondering if this unit would be worth the extra price or just overkill for what I need.
@DavidB-MTO4 ай бұрын
If your just doing a few kitchen knives here and there I would get the Gen 3. If your looking at keeping your entire knife collection sharp then the KosiM. The Gen 3 isn't suited for pocket knives but it can be done. The flexibility of the KosiM allows it to sharpen a lot more than the Gen3. They're in two different categories, but it's hard to ignore the price between them.

You need a microbevel on the apex around 2 degrees higher than the edge. So if your edge is 20 deg. use a ceramic honing rod on it at 22 deg. Amazon sells ceramic honing rods with plastic guides to help you get the angle you want. I just got one and it works great to get that next level of sharpness you (and I prior) didn't know we were missing. I guess you could try using your highest grit stone at 22 degrees (or sharpen at 18 and microbevel at 20 if you want). But you have to use a feather light touch. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try. I've got a ceramic rod that came with my Edge Pro along with some other stuff I have.

Do you think this unit would be capable of sharpening a chef knife with a recurved style blade? For reference, I'm specifically referring to a knife like the Dalstrong Gladiator Series 7-inch Barong. (I'd leave a link, but KZbin won't allow it.) Thanks for a great video!
@DavidB-MTO4 ай бұрын
At first I read this as convexed lol My poor brain is tired. I looked up your knife, I do believe this would work. The stones are only an inch wide and your recurve is gentle enough that the stone edges shouldn't have issues following the arc of the edge.

Good demo! It’s surprisingly similar to my Kadet Pro that cost 6x more. A wrap of kapton tape will firm up the grip of the clamps without the wiggle of rubber. What size are the clamp screws? A knurled or T-handle wrench should provide enough torque to adequately tighten the clamps. What is the diameter of the rod? Curious if other stone holders (like Hapstone) will fit to allow two-sided flat ended stones like Venev. Thanks!
@DavidB-MTO4 ай бұрын
Yeah it's very similar, I would say a copy of it. I will look into the kapton tape. I don't know any sizes, I don't have any calipers to check but I'm sure I can get info from Xarilk. Yes I think a T shaped wrench would work better. The clamps from my pioneer fit the Xarilk so it would be whatever size those are. I will say the rods on the Xarilk sharpeners are no where near as nice as others. No polish or anything, I think it hinders the smoothess somewhat.
