A few years ago in Nevada, a buddy of mine and I were waved over by a guy in a truck, selling homemade M-80s and quarter sticks. We got a demonstration of each and goddamn, the explosions were so strong the blast wave gave me heart palpitations. I don't want to know what else this guy was making at home.

In the 60s, a silver bomb would go bam. A cherry bomb would go boom, and an M_ 80 would go whoom.

I got hold of just one M-80 ever, back in the early 70s. I was 12. Set it under a coffee can, lit the fuse, jumped a little ways down the side of the (very steep) hill, and covered my ears with my hands. Wondered what was taking so long. Popped back up over the hill just as a wall of smoke rolled over - never heard it!? Then the domed bottom of the can whizzed by my head. Did a quick head swivel looking for shrapnel. None. Where was the rest of the can, then? Looked up. Saw a teeny tiny cylinder tumbling waaaaayy way up in the sky that gradually got bigger until it landed pretty much where it had taken off. So much entertainment for a buck!

My story is when I was at a friends house and he was showing me a M-80 in his folks living room. I questioned whether it was real or not. He lit it and placed it in an ashtray. Bang! His grandfather rushed in and asked "where's the gun". Ha.

@buskman3286

Are these the REAL ones from the 60's/earlier? The M80 back then was clearly the most powerful as we would constantly demonstrate, launching items from cans to 5 gallon pails. When I was later in training in the US Army, they used M80s against concrete blocks to demonstrate how "tamping" an explosive charge made it much more effective in destroying something like bridge pilings, etc. M80's, cherry bombs, and Ashcans were all waterproof/could be lit/tossed in water...or flushed down a toilet. ;)

In Ohio you can get 120 they were called silver salutes. They were better than m80s. When my brother and I were young. We taped together 8 m-80s lit them and ran after the first one went off it blew the other seven all over everywhere we thought we was in war! Funny now but it wasn't back then. 😩

I love the Flash Salute - wasn’t familiar with those! In the late ‘70s in Oklahoma, we could get M-80s easily enough, but by then they had reduced the powder-charge and they were just a slightly bigger bang than a Black Cat. What you have here looks and sounds like a REAL M-80, pre-1970 - older heads in the family had explained to me what M-80s were originally like 😎👍!

I was in the 5 grade walking thru the gym to switch classes. One hundred kids in the gym. Somebody lit and m-80 in the gym all I saw and heard was the flash and bang. Next thing I am on the floor. One of those end plugs hit me in my chest and knocked me out. Had a bruise the size of a softball. I was wearing one of those cotton backed jean coat.
