The sounds is good. Is this recorded with something better than an iphone or camcorder?

Hi there. Thanks for the compliments :). The sound is directly out of the stereo outs of the mixing desk. So it’s a desk tape.

1. What's on the acoustic? 2. Did you cheat or is this a legitimate live take? (If you feel like spilling the secrets to your magic tricks. It's so brilliant though. YOUR MIX MAKES ME EXCITED ABOUT MUSIC AGAIN!!!)
@MichaelIngvarson3 жыл бұрын
@@jbenoit1962 Hey J I'm really happy you enjoy the sound and that it makes you excited about music again! Thant's a big compliment thank you!! The recording is really very simple as is the mix. On the Nylon acoustic is a Mercenary Audio KM69 which is like a Neuman KM84 but maybe a little more open (more top end). It's funny because I didn't have enough mic stands that day so I grabbed a small broken one so the mic was lower than I normally put it maybe 10 cm below strings kind of pointing up like to 10 o'clock diagonally just to the right of the sound hole. Yes it's live LOL. Recorded into and Apollo X8p. Reverb is UAD plate 140.Tiniest bit of 1176 on it (as in the reduction is 0-2db at times max 3db at end of song). Attack 2.5 release 5. UAD ATR102 on master bus and subtle oxford inflator. Vocal has UAD LA2A Grey same sort of gain reduction as acoustic and same reverb. That's it! Very simple and basic mixing. It helps to have nice microphones and performers. The NU 100-k is such a smooth mic. Perhaps I tracked through a hardware Distressor. I usually do. For learning about recording and mixing there is so much free on the internet and great resources like Puremix and Mix With The Masters, (Gearspace). Don't give up :) Maybe just a bit more experience is all you need? It's not hard just a few basic technical understandings, research and experience. You will get there! :)

@@MichaelIngvarson Thank you for the details! I'm a relatively young man over on the West Coast and have been at it for a long, long time professionally. Lots of experience however I've run into several mixes the last few days that have been downright inspirational (including what appears to be the creative output of your entire clan!) Dave Pensado said about once a decade he encounters a mix that makes him scrap everything and go right back to the drawing board and I think I may have just arrived. Reflecting upon your notes I think in order to sound more like I would like to (you!) and less like I presently do I need to invest more effort at the point of capture and resist the urge to do too much on the back end. Seems to be a conflict between coming from the world of commercial pop, EDM and hip-hop but having my heart resonate with beautiful, musical sources captured with beautiful equipment then left alone. Ten years spent figuring out the former -- time to invest myself in pursuit of the latter. You've set the gold standard my friend. Thank you!
@MichaelIngvarson3 жыл бұрын
@@jbenoit1962 Oh thank you so much J! BTW So sorry for presuming you were new to recording and mixing - I hope I didn't come across as condescending giving all that advice about learning etc!! That makes your praise mean even more! My parents are both originally from Perth ( my grandfather from Denmark jumped ship in Fremantle! LOL).
@jbenoit19623 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelIngvarson No condescension whatsoever. It was a wonderful wake up call whilst I was slipping into complacency. I went straight from a mix I was struggling with that was "Meh, good enough" to referencing Tribute 1 and Arabella samples and right through the studio monitors came the "oh WOW!" revelation that was your mix. Your generosity is also very much inspirational as I begin to transition my focus from solely production to that of education and encouragement which is where I realized my heart is at. Your work with your family is also a wonderful portrait of what life might be like twenty years from now and how the professional and personal can integrate in really wonderful ways. It's a wonderful thing to see modelled and really encouraging as the late nights mixing seem like something at odds with family life but now I know that to be demonstrably false. My studio is in O'Connor one suburb down from Freo. Well integrated in the scene with Spacey Jane, Eskimo Joe and the like (though I believe they're mostly on your side of the pond these days.) Definitely something in the water! :)
