I developed this game 24 years ago, really enjoyed creating it. When I started developing games, "Space Invaders" played a major role to ignite my passion and of course "Asteroids" somewhat inspired this extended concept.
@LemonTubeAmiga3 күн бұрын
I love your game, and I can clearly see inspiration in those games you mention. This concept has been used even recently to make similar games, and I saw one recently, but cant remember the name. Does your game have a fixed number of levels? Or is it endless?
@volkerwertich16583 күн бұрын
@@LemonTubeAmiga That was really long ago 8-) ...let me think! I remember that each level had some kind of enemy setup configuration (like asteroids only, or this and that spaceship enemy type) and the number of those configurations was limited for sure and not randomized. I can't remember if it is 30 or maybe even 50 different setups. And I think if they are all completed, it starts over with the first setup, but even higher amount of enemies. But forgive me if the info is incorrect, too many years passed since the development of this game 8-)

It's a masterpiece, sir. If coders had developed this kind of 3D gaming, we could have had any number of 3D blasters. Still, we got this one! There are some bugs it seems with some cracked versions, but still worth 10/10.
@volkerwertich16583 күн бұрын
@@LemonTubeAmiga Thanks for the kind words. The 3D engine was an experimental project of a friend of mine named Ingo Frick together with me, but we didn't use it for a game initially and went to other ideas next. But some time later I returned to it and thought it would be a shame not to use it at all, and created this Defender-style game. I think the 3D engine was rather extreme and ate up most of the Amiga memory, because it had thousands of code-generated different draw routines which were chosen by calculating a memory adress to directly jump to, to maximize performance by avoiding any further branch ("if") commands.

To beat the game you have to rush the enemy carrier. I don't remember exactly but you can tell where the enemy carrier is by the islands being taken. Then follow it and kill it.
@LemonTubeAmiga3 күн бұрын
A great tip. Yeah, I read about waiting around for the carrier and using the ships guided missiles to take down the carrier early, but not much of a game in dong that. I only just realised you can even store planes on islands with an air strip to help fight the enemy.
@ultraforce3513 күн бұрын
@LemonTubeAmiga I think I just tracked the carrier down. It runs at the same speed as your carrier and takes off. The using planes I shot it up and won the game.

Easily worth watching just to hear your rendition of the Super Cars 2 theme! This one doesn't ring a bell for me but looks like a decent enough effort. I imagine Psygnosis slapped an extra fiver on the price tag and put it in a shiny box. Definitely not much wrong with the game and it does move well and looks nice. But probably poor value for money at a time when you could pick up Lotus or Super Hang-On on budget.

The intro is already a pretty good one but the menu music is sooo good, I loved it so much that I have recorded on a tape with other musics of Amiga games back in the day :D The game overall is a pretty nice one but the bike has no grip whatsoever ruining the gameplay.. I don't know why you are encountering all those crashes, I played it back in the day and it was running perfectly.
@LemonTubeAmiga9 күн бұрын
Totally agree, if the bike had any grip at high speed, it would be playable, but I guess the aim is to slow down enough so you dont slide out so much? The game crashed for me but I cant remember how or why, and perhaps it was related to other things on my custom setup at that time? At least I remembered to save it up next time. ;)

As usual, the Lemon score is the most accurate one. Don't know what Stuart Campbell was thinking.
@LemonTubeAmiga9 күн бұрын
Stuart was always reluctant to play some games, and he generally played his favs in the AP office, unless something big came up. Some say the arrogance of youth? But it did make for some really great reviews. AP was my mag, and SC reviews were generally the best, due to this. Giving games a low score in AP was not unusual, as we saw recently with their re-release score for Highway Patrol II. I think 6.5 is about right. See my review in the description. :)

@@LemonTubeAmiga funny... well Psygnosis did not release any FPS game for Amiga. In the end Breathless, Alien Breed 3D II TKG and Trapped II came as the peak games. Some ported WipeOut 2097 for PowerPC etc. This game came out in 1993,... so interesting why Psygnosis took so much from both Amiga and PC games at that time.

X-out is a great game, with the fatal flaw of not being newbie friendly. It is frustrating when games don't give enough in-game help (in this case ship choice & upgrade screen) and there are lots of them on the Amiga. If you can get past the initial (rather abrupt) learning curve, the game is very rewarding.

We had this for our 486 computer. With the sound blaster (or ad lib, I can't remember) audio, it had a song that would play during the racing stage. If I recall correctly, anytime you hit the police barricade, it results the cop chasing you, not just you being in first place. You can see in this video the moment you hit the police barricade, the dispatch lady says "They're in front of you pa!" I don't know how it worked for the amiga, but I remember being extremely frustrated for the dos version that there was no way to quit the game. I had to reset the computer every time I wanted to quit.

Easily one of my fave shooters on the Amiga because it was better suited to the more casual shoot-em-up fan (like me) so didn't have the ludicrous difficulty of the plethora of hardcore shooters around at the time. Always liked the novelty of "spending" your score to outfit the ship, although it often meant my scores were pretty wanky for how far I'd got. The C64 conversion was every bit as impressive as the Amiga version, even included the intro sequence and SID rendition of almost the entire soundtrack provided by Michael Hendriks (FAME)... and even includes parallax scrolling (though the Amiga version is hardly lacking just because it doesn't have that) but uses software "spriites" to overcome the sprite limitations, so doesn't have the visual impact that the Amiga version has.

Battle Squadron was my favourite SHMUP on the Amiga. 2nd was Hybris. 3rd was X-Out.

Thanks for inspiring many of my reviews over the years, I've now fixed the description to say November 2015, which is probably when I watched you playing the Amiga and C64 versions. If you hadn't mentioned the player can buy lives, I would have been totally oblivious to it, it several magazines even commented about having just one life. I dont know much about the technicalities, but it seems both versions tried to push some limits. I had roughly 2584% more fun with this than I even did playing Project X, and 9999% more fun than playing R-Type. Sadly, we are now coming to the end of my run of game review and guide videos, but I'll still put out some videos occasionally, probably, just not a whole series of 24 shows. There are very few games that I want to cover, but I got the idea to cover the first Amiga games I ever played, like Wizball and Last Ninja 2, so you can bet those will be only a few minutes in length, due to the underpinning limitations of those games. Yes, even Insanity Fight. :( :(
