yes , have heard of RIAA curve i used a crystal cartridge on the aux of a receiver not equipped with special eq but it sounded fine
@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple Күн бұрын
RIAA is sometimes built into Crystal cartridges. Others are Flat responses and need the EQ added. BUT in the end if you do the bass and treble so that it sounds OK, it is OK. It would only cause problems if using an output from your amp that is intended to be flat responce IE the tape output. On the Crosley the signals are "nasty". but the replay sounds "OK" because of the naff speakers.

My Turntable was a real Hi-Fi TT I had to save up for it. (People thought I was mad spending that much on a record player) The spec was better than my current TTs. However, the supporting amp and speakers were not up to much (The best I could afford at the time) Girlfriend/marriage was the cause of the end of that Hi-Fi trial. Money had to be spent on other things. I love my Teac. It is good and sounds nice.

@@GaryKeepItSimple I try and eek out every little bit of high frequency as I can. My ears are getting older as well. I use a decent pair of headphones to get the best out of the tape. If a tape gets too under biased it will start to distort and become brittle. Too much bias and you lose high frequency and the bass becomes more muddy. It's more nostalgia and tinkering with a tape deck that makes me happy. Tape is just fun to record on. It's not the best sounding format but it can still sound pretty darn good. It adds the analog back in from the digital format for me but with one cavioyot, compression. That said, It can tame some brighter recordings if you like to flavor the sound a little. That's been my experience. Happy listening ✌️🙂

Also just a thought, are you feeding in the LINE IN sockets and not the LINE OUT. on the deck? Some machines will show VU if you accidentally feed the signal IN the OUT sockets (But will do nothing with the signal). Hello Mr Gray, I’m having a little problem. You see, I recently bought a marantz sd221 stereo cassette deck at my local thrift store. Works perfectly so I’m in the search to find an amplifier to be able to connect it to speakers. Problem is that the tape deck has a red and black RCA cables attached to it and all the amplifiers I’ve searched have red and white RCA inputs. I wanted to ask if you have any affordable amplifiers recommendations for tape decks with red and black RCA for both line in and line out? Thank you

Hi Gary , I have TEAC W-1200 now about 6 months old. I recorded about 70 tapes now, so 60 and 90 minutes. My total play time incl recording now is like 90 hours, so 45 hours per Deck. I see some dust traces on the heads, so I bought IPA alcohol to clean, and demiwater for the rollers. This arrives tomorrow so then I will clean. My question is, do I need to demagnetize already? I dont have issues with sound quality. It sounds a bit tricky when doing wrong. Br, Ralph
@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple 6 күн бұрын
No, do not demagnetise unless you are having problems. Demagnetising is not a preventative, it is a cure for very specific problems that you do not have. (very few people will ever have) It can, and does, cause very big problems if done wrong. I would not recommend using Demi water on the rollers, or on any part of any deck as a mater of course. Water is the enemy of both electronics and mechanical systems. It is up to you but for at least 60 years that I have had an interest in machines, isopropyl alcohol is the recommended cleaning agent for pinch rollers and all surfaces. Heads,orings,tyres etc. Alchol evaperates in seconds and is inert. Water (all water) hanges around for ages in comparison and is corrosive (That is why cars rust). Time makes pinchrollers hard, not IPA. (SONY TEAC etc all recommend IPA.) Come back if you want any other information. Thanks for asking.

of all the records I own, only the thin ones are warped. And even putting a centre weight on them doesn't eliminate the warping when playing. So I do prefer a bit heavier quality. Tyres have carbon black added to them to reduce wear, it might also help with vynil, who knows...

The problem with any plastic disk is warpage. Flexy disks do not warp! They flop around. LOL I believe Black records have carbon in them to colour them. Unless you know better? But they do have to be coloured black. Silicon spray may be the way to go for wear reduction. But I watched a video about playing records from VWestlife and if I remember correctly, he recons 500 plays without any real change in the sound is normal.

Minor rant - the cost is manufactured and used against us when you 'plug into the AC'... - so it's a jilted study based on how the controllers of the 'utilities' scam us with our inherint resources like electricity , fuel, and now in Canada , "carbon" tax which is a deadly scam against all life forms - but the sheeple fall in line and are paying this tax blindly and obediently. I"m not sure if you're a God fearing man Gary - but we were given our resources to use not abuse , not to pay for them with money during our life. We are all supposed to have the ability to build and maintain our own houses , on our own property for our own family but this is almost non existant in 2024 unless your family has kept the old homestead so to speak. Oh and by the way Gary .. If I boil water, I put it on the natural gas flame on the stove. Natural gas, (like abiotic oil) runs under us in almost infinite supply like water does as well... again another scam the controllers have said it's 'fossil fuel' which is a lie - to make it sound like it's a scarce commodity but you cap up a 'dead' oil station and come back later - it will be full in time. Water is another topic of course..

That’s why I’ve worked so hard to collect as many Led Zeppelin concerts (okay, I admit - they’re bootlegs) on CD as possible. You can stream just about all of them here on KZbin, but one day Atlantic Records will wise up and take them all down in an attempt to create their own paid service to stream them. But I’ll already own a lot of them! Same thing with Pink Floyd and Cream and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. One day they’ll all disappear.

Just as the name implies 'natural sound' it is very neutral to my ears. As I was around when things were being perfected I find it amusing when young KZbinrs wrongly attribute the evolution of things and reason for it. You should expect Much better results from a DD. A belt drive is a cheap improvement to Idler drive but at the sacrifice of speed accuracy and speed stability. Belt drive uses cheap DC motors and flimsy mounts to reduce rumble. Pitch controls were not necessary with Mains synced AC motors.

They way they lay out the manuals is pretty cookie cutter and simple lay outs the have used for many years now. That lay out is nice as it’s very straightforward (mostly) so all the manuals I have for their stuff has a familiar feel to it. Will this also work on true chromes that can’t be calibrated because they’ve deteriorated? I have a couple BASF and SKC-made Scotch true chromes that don’t seem to calibrate on my Sony deck because of their age.
@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple 14 күн бұрын
I have seen a video where someone used a BASF true chrome that was degraded(He said) and calibrated it as a type I bias set as high as it would go (+15%approx), with type 2 EQ and it worked for him he said. he did not do tests only ears. . I was not convinced because type 1 Bias is 100% and type 2 bias is 150%. If I had suspect tapes, I would try recording the test tones I use and see (and hear) what the results are. In my experience I have not had any true chromes be bad BUT and this is a big but. True chromes will not drive over 0db at all. They can just about peak at around +1 db. However that is not a problem as they are by nature VERY quiet, the range is there because it is such a low noise floor. it just means to get the best out of them turn up the replay Hi-Fi amp 1 click higher to get the same sound level. The results have all been superb. I hope that answers your question. Feel free to come back for specific info. Cheers.

Hi. that is a good deck you have , lets look at it in sequence. Are you saying it records OK on the right channel with good-quality sound and that the left is low level and distorted? What is the playback of a known good tape like? If it is good and balanced , that says the fault is in the record system. If that is the case then we need to look at the record head. Is it clean? is it smooth? Is the tape running over it correctly? The head connections could be a problem or even the head itself could be at fault. ( they can break down) . DO NOT adjust the head in any physical way. Just look and clean if necessary. That is the starting point. depending on what you find determines the next steps. Can you use a soldering iron and do you have any tech knowledge and tools? (Multi meter, cutters, plyers, cotton buds and Isopropyl Alcohol, and Contact cleaner( Not wd40))? I am happy to help if I can. get back to me with the answers and we can see where this goes. Cheers
