Great lesson. watched the whole thing, even though I've been playing this song for years. Looking forward to seeing Tricky Dicky support Oasis this summer at Murrayfield.

Please watch the video of John playing this and you will understand why it is such as sad song. The words in his songs are simple but so powerfully create a picture of human frailty. The essence of poetry in a song.

Im 62 had a guitar since I was 17.... but I never had any consistency, it would be under the stairs in a case for months at a time. I was advised to get a stand and it made a hell of a difference. Im guilty still of learning bits and pieces & trying to learn stuff im not good enough to learn. Very factual lesson Joe.

Such great advice as always Joe. I play a lot more guitar since having mine on a stand..so easy to pick up and play rather than tucked away in its case. Also I agree with the song choice sometimes learning more 3-4 chord songs is more fun and a lot easier than more complex songs that require a higher level of ability.

I second your suggestion for a stand. Ease of access is so impotant

I keep my guitar next to me when I'm sat around all the time. It's got it's own place next to me on the settee. I play it watching tele or when I'm listening to music. Even if I don't fully know the tune, I'll jam along to it and work it out on the fly. I am a bit guilty of only learning bits of songs though, I may need to work on that a bit more. Cheers for the video.

I’ve played for 45 years, there’s always been a Yamaha guitar in my living space, it’s never moved, never been setup, never been dusty. I’ve had a Martin go south in it’s case, the Gibson is solid, and the 13 other guitars in my collection, mostly crap, play regardless of storage. Guitars have to be accessible, :) Cheers, great video.

Love this. One question, am I missing something or is the 5th string not plucked when you have the chord fretted (index on second fret 5th string) I played bass as 6th string 5th (with chord fretted) then 5th string 4th string when all strings were open and thought it sounded nice

Hi Steve, thanks so much for posting unfortunately I don’t completely understand whereabouts you are talking about within the song. But if it sounds right it generally is right with what you feel or try both and see what you feel. Sounds best for you all the very best.

I told my daughter that I knew the chords A-G and I would play whichever one she called out. She said “B!” I took me a moment to realize I never learned it. 😂

Absolutely by yourself or don't get stuck in the comfort zone mostly playing what you already know. Like learning finger picking and getting all fingers and thumbs insync. It's uncomfortable learning but there's nothing like a breakthrough. When you finally get it. Then i warm up with stuff i know and get out of your zone

I have been playing guitar 30 years. I'm mostly self taught, so I have been death gripping this whole time. I always thought barre chords were just supposed to hurt! The index finger position on the fretboard never occurred to me. Glad I found this vid!

So good to hear proper vocals with the chords. A song is meaningless without. Really well sung too.
