Probably the magneto on the flywheel? Maybe check the contacts on it and see if they are dirty.. check the voltage coming from the wiring from the magneto whilst spinning the engine over, if theres no charge coming from there then you wont get a spark. Also check the earth connections for corrosion. You can put an earth directly to the diode on the spark plug from a battery and that'll give you a good idea if the earth connections are faulty.. The only other things it can be are the coil packs or leads as far as i know.. its been a while since i owned the mercury so memory is vague, but thats about as much help i can be

Do a basic tune up first I gaurantee it will help. Grab some fresh fuel in a 2 gallon jug. That old varnish can’t help, change the spark plugs. I know they “fine” do it anyway. Look at the butterfly valves on your carburetor, make sure they’re both closed at deal idle, fully open (90 degrees) at wide open throttle, and most importantly opening at the same time, 2 strokes have a small diaphragm fuel pump and that will lose elasticity over time, 2 bolts and 5-10 dollars. There’s also a fuel filter can degrade over time and seriously stop fuel flow to the carbs, I’ve found carb cleaner will often bring carburetors back to life without disassembling them as you can lose springs and just make it worse. Lastly is timing, timing is the most difficult thing to measure but if you have a timing light check that the spark is at the right time, do this by removing the spark plug wires and cranking the engine. Idle timing and wot timing can be checked at cranking speed

Is this a correct running engine? The water comes out spraying beneath the pee hole as if its coming out of some gasket. is that normal?
@vinikoffmusic

Yes it was a correct running engine. There is no leak its just spray from the tell tale or pee hole as you referred to it. Just a funny camera angle. This video was taken about 7 years ago.

@@vinikoffmusic you can see the water from tell tale which comes out a straight line. but also right under it, it is spraying water. my outboard does the same thing.

Hello I have that exact engine on my suntracker bass buggy 18. It will not go over 9mph and burned a 5 gallon tank in about 1 1/2 hours runtime any thoughts? Thanks

If its revving correctly, it sounds like a gearbox problem. If it isnt revving to full revs i would say have to have the carburettor rebuilt. As i say thougg if its revving high but not giving much power, it'll definitely be a gearbox issue, maybe a worn shaft? Never had many problems with this one and it was actually sold again recently by the guy that bought it from me. Still going strong 6 years after i sold it.. Good engines, so if its a gearbox problem, its worth fixing. One other thing, check the propellor shaft as these can wear or seize the bearings.

Thanks it ended up being carburetor. I rebuilt it and it runs between 20-25 mph now major difference. Safe boating brother!
