Hey Jess! Any tips for creating a studio policy? Is it beneficial to make a super long and detailed one? What are some things you've found are super important and what isn't necessary to have in writing?
@JessVoigtPage
@JessVoigtPage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mary! I always found that the more detailed I could be, the more I was able to stand firm, or make exceptions as I chose to. I think the main thing is to think about what you absolutely need to have covered: - Fee structure and payment details - Attendance - Expectations for the student and the family - If you have additional, specific things, be sure to put them in there I always start with my policies as black and white and formal as possible. Then, throughout the year, take notes on where to adjust them for the following year if needed. (My policies updated every year)

This was so helpful, thank you for answering my question!! It was helpful to even just see what the different emailing websites look like. One of the roadblocks I've encountered is that I have to sign up and put in all my info before even seeing what the platform is like and if I enjoy using it. Looking forward to starting my own email list soon with my new knowledge!

Is there any reason one wouldn't have to register their business? With doing some small research, I was reading if you use your own name then you wouldn't need to register. I.e. My business being "Curtis' Saxophone Studio" vs. something like "Atlantas Most Fantastic Saxophone Place To Be Studio"
@JessVoigtPage
@JessVoigtPage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Curtis. It's going to depend on a number of factors - including type of business (if you're filing for an LLC for example), and if you're using a variant of your name, or a new name entirely. If you're functioning as a sole proprietor through your name, thats going to be different than is you're going by a different name, or entity for example. The best thing to do is check with your county clerk's office for specific advice on your individual situation. The good news is that the people there are trained for exactly these types of questions and you'll get an answer specific to you super fast!

If you're in music school, make friends with the composition students whose music you like! And if you're not a pianist, get to know some! I had been wondering whether you guys had power, and thus whether there would be a video this week. Glad to see you're not having to deal with that particular problem.

I started teaching from my home studio a few months before Covid happened. It was hard the past couple years to get students. I got really good at teaching online. I teach piano and I have 6 in person students now. I really want to recruit many new students and eventually be able to find a new location to teach out of. Teaching from home is very inconvenient. Great video! Thank you for the pointers.

Yep! And if you know you're offering something really awesome, you want your people to know it's awesome! I am planning to talk about this next week too - we all place more value on the things in our lives that cost more money - so if you want to be working with people who truly value you and your services, you have to value yourself too!

Definitely some intriguing stuff here. I'm going to have to think more about the reverse-engineering of goals; sounds like something that might actually work for me. By the way -- should we now address you as Madam President? ;-)
@JessVoigtPage
@JessVoigtPage 3 жыл бұрын
haha! Only if you want to! I really find reverse engineering the process to be super helpful because it gives me steps to take even when I don't feel like doing anything on a day - knowing that there's a plan that I can follow (that i designed for myself), means goals can be reached with the least resistance possible.

Never been a resolutions person. When I was a kid, and asked my parents whether they had new year's resolutions, they basically told me it's a way to set oneself up to be disappointed. Unfortunately, I'm not great with goals either, I think because 1) I'm not good at thinking "long-term"/"big picture," and 2) I worry, as with resolutions, about not achieving what I set out to do.
@JessVoigtPage
@JessVoigtPage 3 жыл бұрын
Oh I hear you on that too! I set different kinds of goals also so I can get into the habit of achieving things along the way. 12 month, 6 month, 90 days, 30 days 24 hours(haha!) etc. It doesn't always work, but I do know that when I cross things off my goals list, its a little self esteem boost. I also try to break the goals down into smallest possible steps so I get that dopamine hit regularly enough to keep me reaching those little goals on the way to the big ones. :)
@rloomis3
@rloomis3 3 жыл бұрын
@@JessVoigtPage Oh, if we count to-do lists as setting goals, then I guess I'm not quite as bad as I indicated. It can still take me a ridiculously long time to cross things off, but I know what you mean about the dopamine dose -- there's definitely a satisfaction to knowing that something got done.

I love the idea of goals as opposed to resolutions! Setting ourselves up for success rather than failure reminds me of your video Time To Get Clear. It's important to "get clear" and plan out a long-term goal, rather than using January 1st to tackle it with no game-plan!
@JessVoigtPage

100% As you know, I'm a big fan of using language and my thoughts to focus on where I want to go, rather than get stuck on where I don't want to do. You get what you focus on, so setting yourself up to succeed is going to lead you down a much clearer path than trying to avoid failing!
