i've been teaching myself how to manually defeature imported geometry for about 8 months on-and-off. if rebuilding time is a main concern, i would have used direct editing, surface tools, and a re-export and import to split the spines and threads off as there own bodies. then have them supressed/unsupressed in the desired config. then roll that freeze bar to the bottom for extra. a lot of features will take up time rebuilding, especially if you have "merge result" turned on. (just from my experience) so i re-export and import again to get rid of any features that it has to calculate. only thing left will be imported geometry.

Screw drivers and other tools... Well how can you draw them in the required coordinates without starting them in the very model's assembly? I mean maybe I don't know something, but when I draw a new part that I want to come in some particular place in an assembly, I either start drawing it in an assembly, or mate it in an assembly. So, what if I simply put a screwdriver in an assembly, and then rebuild it and save? will a screwdriver become visible in a composer or not? I mean yes I can find the coordinates of a screw in an assembly and draw a screwdriver seperately, but that would be harder, so what if I simply draw it or mate it, and then it should become visible in a composer assembly, shouldn't it?

Hi, thanks for your question! I do not insert 3d models for tools, etc. into SolidWorks because I don't want to have to create extra configurations or worry about them showing up on a drawing or worse, in a BOM. In Composer, you can insert a 3D model, then drag/rotate it into approximate position. It's quite easy, especially if you switch between front/top/right views in order to get the approximate position just right. There ARE some basic alignment tools that can make things coincident and concentric, which is also helpful. But the most important rule of thumb is this: It doesn't have to BE right, it just has to LOOK right. As long as you can move the object into the close approximate position that LOOKS right for the view you're creating, you've done your job. Composer doesn't care about exact coordinate placement. It's not important.
