I am sad. 1997 was the year I was born, but I wished I was in my twenties

Can someone exactly explain me why do I miss this? At this particular point I was a 6 month old baby living across the globe… but sometimes a weird nostalgia for 90’ NY hits me. It’s unexplainable, feels like homesickness.

No social media or smart phone. Life was lived in the moment. Our attention was focused more on the scope of our senses and surroundings, and less on the vast background of screens and information sources we now have instant access to at all times. In our current day and age, we are constantly connected to many, many things. Our attention is broad and spread throughout many things, for short times. We are able to consider things fair beyond our immediate surroundings. Some may label this a heightened awareness, but our attention to immediate events happening right in front of us and our ability to live in the moment has really suffered. I can’t tell you how often I see people staring at their phone camera while records a live event, rather than watch the… live event. It’s always struck me as sort of spooky and dystopian. The stuff of science fiction.

How I miss the 90's New York. Just seeing my Twin Towers still standing, reminds me of all that has changed and what was lost. I miss those days.

Even more nostalgia as a Asian American when I saw the China Town. If you think this whole video is really different from NYC now, then you'll be surprise when you see China Town in nowaday, it change the most in NYC, half of it still looks the same, half of it lost that look completely and we'll never able to get it back.

Having visited NYC in the mid-90s, I'm just as nostalgic as most are watching this; it's amazing. But also because that day, 30.11, was significant, as 1.12 was a bad day for me, so it's like watching the last day of semblance when all was good. Thank you.

The economy was way better back in these days. Call it the tech bubble, what you will, I laugh thinking about how many places have closed down since then and left a vacuum. All the music stores, book stores, sharper image type stores, all closed now. Sure a few are still open, but nothing like it was in the '90s. To me this just speaks to a disposable income we no longer have! I'm glad I got to live through it. It was a pretty special time. Yes there were problems to be sure, but we were still kind of excited about modern living. These days are precious too, but you have to find your own beauty in it, you can't find it just going out in the world like you used to.
