It was by the book, to very nearly the exact letter. What an incredible spectacle and achievement. What a film, what a series, what a moment that will forever be encapsulated. No one can hear that horn blow for the first time and not think "Fuck....yes!". It's the 2000s version of "On your left" - finally, after multiple movies, amounting to more than a dozen hours, all of the pieces are on the board, moving into the position they have needed to get to and about to make everything pay off. It won't be a win without cost but even if they lost everyone was there at the hour of need. And if you're reading this and have NOT heard Tolkein read the section of his book that describes the Ride of the Rohirrim search for it right now, it's brilliant in its description and it's also immediate just how faithfully Jackson adapted the words.

Best scene in the trilogy. Yes, charging to their deaths, but promising to fight to the death too! No enemy is more dangerous than one who has accepted his own death! The ones that fell before them learned that very quickly! This scene still moves me like no other. It is better to fall in a stand up fight than to rot in a cage.

Little fun fact about the Riders of the Rohirrim: A lot of them were women. Not in canon, but many of the actual people playing the part of the riders in this scene were women. At some point during the filming of the movie, the directors came to realize that they didn't have enough riders. So they put out a casting call: "Anybody who brings their own horse can be a Rider of the Rohirrim. As it turns out, a lot of the people who own their own horses are women. (There's a story where one women actually went out into a field with a bunch of wild horses and more or less tamed one of them on the spot just so she could take part in the ride.) So the directors and crew were just like "eh, alright," slapped on a bunch of fake beards, and called it a day.
