Here’s his story (copied and pasted from the Sonic Oddities Wiki Page): Sonic and Tails were exploring the first level of Sonic Crackers, when Tails fell into an area with no collision and fell into the code of the game, landing in a place where his code was eventually corrupted. Sonic wasn't quick enough to catch Tails and now Sonic goes to find him. Little does Sonic know, Tails' code has been erased and the place he'd have to go to is inaccessible, so basically, he's stuck roaming this unfinished mess of a place trying to find his friend who doesn't exist anymore. Travelling this whole area has messed with Sonic's own code a sizeable amount as well. As a result of this, his appearance is modified and takes some traits from other parts of the game. When he gets too emotional, (angry, sad, scared) his sprites glitch, turning him into his Unstable form, which makes the game even more glitchy. There are 2 possible endings to Defunct's story: a Good Ending, and a Bad Ending. Good Ending At some point, after Defunct has spent long enough inside the ROM to realize that his reality is fake and easily changed and manipulated, he discovers that the code that kept Tails in the game has been corrupted beyond repair. Defunct then attempts to redo the code himself, and bring Tails back to life. After this has been done, Defunct returns to reality and sees his best friend finally back after years of searching for him. Defunct is overwhelmed with joy, so much joy that it actually repairs every mistake, every glitch, and every dysfunctional piece of code in the ROM. Defunct's appearance goes back to normal, and he becomes Sonic once more. The two then escape the Sonic Crackers area and continue their journey in the Sonic universe as normal. Sonic is different, though, having learnt that all reality is fake. He doesn't care though. It may be a fake world, but it's a good one. Bad Ending At some point, after Defunct has spent long enough inside the ROM to realize that his reality is fake and easily changed and manipulated, he discovers that the code that kept Tails in the game has been corrupted beyond repair. Defunct is devastated. He's spent an indescribable amount of time looking for somebody that hasn't even existed since he started looking. Defunct's best friend is gone, and there's nothing Defunct can do to save him. Overwhelming negative emotions flow through him, slowly corrupting and erasing every line of code in the ROM, until eventually, the game hits a reset point.
