My great grandpa served with E company 2nd Battalion 509th PIR in North Africa in WWII. He made either 5 or 6 combat jumps in the war: Tafaroui Airfield, Youks-les-Bains, the El Djem Bridge Raid (possibly) with the 509. He later jumped with the first wave into Sicily with the 505th PIR. He also jumped into Normandy and Holland with the 101st and served at Bastogne. He passed in 2006 just before I was born. I’m so proud of him, and I want to join the Army and become a paratrooper like him in either the 509th or the 505th. All the Way; Geronimo!

@@GreenBeretUnlimited Climbing has certainly evolved, and I enjoy watching these old army videos. I'm interested in taking this course during my time in as I love to climb and have recently enlisted. Is this school only for SF bound soldiers or is there potential to go later?

@@Toastyblaine13 This one is only for special forces but there are other military mountaineering schools to attend if you are in a job or unit that requires it. Definitely was a chance of a lifetime for me.. Last week I got to climb with my boys in West Virginia and it was so much fun. Certainly not like I used to, but still a great time to get on the rocks and the great outdoors.

Morse was all we did and I was an 05B4S with a POS dipole and no tuner. It's a wonder we ever made comms. The ERP sucked. 18 series did not come out till the mid 80's. The S on the end of your MOS was Special Forces qualified. Back then it was a flash you got from your assigned Group after SFQC. P was airborne and V was for Ranger. When I left active and went to Reserve SF I was told by the Company SGM to go ahead and have a Beret built for our group. Got my ham ticket while at Devens and still have it. There are a few of us that get together on HF but little is ever said on the air about our prior service.

Thanks for your service Robert! I started with someone the old timers of SF from the Vietnam Era. They were the last of their kind for sure! Many of them served in the old 11th SFG before it was disbanded around 1989/1990, that was reorganized into the 19th SFG. Always good to hear those old stories!

Hey my brother is making me come with him to do this and I’m not a good swimmer and I’m terrified. He says I’ll be fine. A riptide almost killed me a decade ago and I haven’t been swimming since. As well, I’m scared of sharks. Is it dangerous? Should I shut up and just try it? Thanks!

Yes. Swim the surface and enjoy it. Sharks are very rare in that area. No riptide either. Wear a floatation vest if you are concerned.

That's right. Don't go out too far, just come 100-200' off the wall and go right. It's not deep at all but be careful of waves. I do not recommend if not reasonably calm. Send me pics if you can. [email protected]

@@GreenBeretUnlimited Indeed, it was when the 09 was based at Caserma Ederle near Vicenza. I remember the runs to Monte Berico. The 2.5 miles there back was not a problem, it was those 300+ steps up the steep hill that was the issue. Lt. Colonel Nuke'm Needem was our commander. . . fun times!
